how can you tell if you have your period or vaginal bleeding?

You mean vaginal bleeding from a cut or tear in the skin (like from rough sex, or first-time sex, or ... being like I did once and using a tampon clumsily... or?) Or do you mean spotting in between periods (a common side effect of the Pill, but it can also happen if you're pregnant, or just for no reason at all)? Or?
