I just realized today that I will be getting my period on the day that my boyfriend and I leave for vacation in Florida. Needless to say, I'm not at all happy about that. I am on the pill, but don't want to risk unnecessary spotting/breakthrough bleeding by skipping the placebos and going right to the next pack. Unfortunately, this means I will need to wear a tampon. I've had some bad experiences with them in the past, the last time I tried to get one in, I guess I didn't push it in far enough, because I could still feel it, so I figured I'd take it out and try again with another one. They say you just "lightly pull" the string, and the tampon should come out, however I had to PULL with all my might to get it out. My guess is because it wasn't wet enough to "slide out" but it was still scary nonetheless.

My question is, can anyone recommend a good tampon for me to try? I have a pretty light cycle, so I know I need a lite or slim, or whatever it's called, and preferably easy to insert. Any suggestions? I'm clueless when it comes to tampons. I'd like to try the divacup or cup of some sort someday in the future, but for now I need to deal with the tampons.

thanks in advance :)

I've found that OB tampons are amazing.
they expand to fit you and they have a couple different absorbencies.
and let me tell you, i've tried a lot of different tampons.

There are disposable cups called Instead that you can even have sex while you're wearing... your drugstore probably carries them...

I personally think given the health risks, environmental harm and social implications the idea of a 'good tampon' is an oxymoron.
I don’t quite understand why you need to use tampons rather than pads, or if you feel you need an internal menstrual product sponges, silicone cups, rubber cups, homemade cups, or softcups would be a far better option, especially if you have problems using tampons. If you DO use tampons then use a safer option – i.e. sponge or organic rather than commercial tampons as there is less risk - basically avoid stores own brands, OB, Lillets and espeshally Tampax.

Why does vacation mean you need to wear a tampon? Florida is COLD right now, so there won't be much bathing suit wearing unless you're a real trooper.

That said, if you skip the placebos, even if you do spot, it'll be even less than a regular period. But, try Tampax Slimfits. They were the only ones I could use, before I switched to Instead.

heh Hate to break it to you, but we've only been reaching a rainy, overcast 50ish during the day recently. Nights are even colder. When are you planning on coming down?

Yeah, unless we get a sudden change of weather, I wouldn't worry about having to wear a bathing suit. It's not so cold you'll be miserable, but it's not really swimming weather.

Try OB non-applicators. They fit in your pocket, and they're VERY little.

I have to give my 2 cents on those little fellas. I love the fact that they're little, but they have that awful cotton feel..I don't know maybe it's just me but I hate the feel of dry cotton. I have to put some astroglide or ky on them first because they really don't feel that nice on the gine when you're sticking them up. Ugh. Yeah, they're so damn messy too. I also have trouble positioning them right and getting them up enough so they feel alright. Maybe it's just cause I have a very posterior (wrong word, err), my uterus tips forward so I've really gotta get in there to get a non-applicator tampon in.

I share other people’s confusion as to why you need to use tampons, if you know about menstrual cups then surely you also know the health risks associated with tampons so know they are best avoided. I will agree with the above comment, avoid commercial tampons especially Tampax – the worst track record of the lot (even before going into the evils of Proctor and Gamble in general), the worse for cramps, the worst for health risks, the worse for the environment.

Menstrual cups can be used when swimming and such, with far less risk than tampons - both health risk and less risk of leaking.

Well, I'm a menstrual cup convert, but I've never thought tampons were as evil as some cup users seems to think. If you're thinking of getting a cup, then I think it's good to use a tampon at least once to get comfortable with fiddling around down there. Anyway, when I first started using tampons, my mom bought me some Playtex Slim Fits. I definitely recommend them, they were great for learning/getting used to using tampons. I was using Tampax Pearls before I got my cup and I really liked those, but I don't know if they come in a slim version.

I'm not gonna preach at you. If you like tampons, cool. So do I. If your flow is really light, the playtex slimfits aren't bad. I prefer Playtex Beyond because the applicator is smooth & tapered (and cardboard, so that's at least a LITTLE better for the environment) and the tampons are as close to natural as you're gonna find in a CVS or Walgreens.

If all else fails, buy a box, try a few, then sell the remains to your friends if you don't like em. Eventually you'll find a brand that works in situations like that (i.e. vacations, tight dress/pants + thong days).

P.S. I don't care what anyone else says, sometimes pads just aren't convenient and I hate mucking about in my own body goo.
