hi! i have a question about heavy periods and birth control pills. i just started taking ortho tri cyclen about a month ago and am currently on my placebo week. i started my period yesterday, the 4th day of placebo pills. the thing is, this period has been unusually heavy for me with bad cramps. this is not normal for me, as i usually never have cramps and do not have heavy periods. however, my last period (before starting birth control pills) was both unusually light and unusually short. so my question is, do you think my heavy period this time is due to the fact that i had a very light one last time (and so need to bleed more) or could it by any chance be due to the birth control pills that i just started? thanks so much for your help!

That is all very unusual. Normally on pills they are lighter without cramps. The first question that I always ask people with bad cramps is what is your potasium intake? Things like eating bananas and strawberries help out with cramps (potasium helps take out that acid build up in muscels made by lack of oxegen, which I have found to be the cause of menstral cramps because those muscels aren't getting enough oxegen). The other thing is aerobic excorsize. Get the oxegen in. Walking, running, cycling...but not weights, because that is anaerobic and make make thiem worse. This is all to help with the now.
In the future, I would call up your gyno and find out if this is being cause by the new hormones, or maybe it would be better for you to try out a different type of pill. I don't know if OTC is estrogen or tetosterone inhancing, but maybe you need to switch to the other? I don't know. It just sounds really wierd because it is doing to opposite of what normally happens. Let me know what you find out because I am really currious now!

i agree with the other poster, usually periods get lighter and less painful. but then again, i'll quote someone who said something clever in vaginapagina community the other day, birth control is like hair dye, it's different for each person that uses it. if you're just starting, you can play around with other types of pill to see which you like best, but generally they advise you to try each type for 3 months to give it time to adjust, unless the side effects are really bothering you. i know for OTC, there is also OTC-lo, which you could try, but there's tons of other brands too.

also i find that caffeine really gives me bad cramping, i don't know if it has that effect on you. good luck with the pill!
