This isn't menstrual related, but vagina related. I'll delete it if you want but I just need some help.

Ever since yesterday I've had a terrible pain around my vagina. It feels "inflammed",like it's burning a little,it's a little itchy and it's wicked sore. It feels swollen also. I put ice on it for a little while and that made it feel better but the minute I started to get up and walk again,it hurt. I put some vagisil on it to stop the itching and I'm pretty sure its working [I don't know,I've never used it before]. But it looks/feels like the labia are swollen. This is pretty painful, the only thing I can think of it being from would be a session of being fingered about a night or two ago. Theres also a slight discharge that doesn't smell that pleasent.

Anything I can do to get rid of this?

It could be either a yeast infection or a bacterial infection - normally yeast infections don't smell, but bacterial infections aren't itchy. Neither is a big deal, but you need to see a doctor or gyno to get it properly diagnosed.

if those 'certain reasons' have anything to do with your parents, just remember that your doctor cannot tell your parents anything that goes on in your appointment, it is confidential by law. if it's because you have no money, i would refer you to planned parenthood - if you go to their website you could find a nearby one.

you can treat yeast infections at home with over the counter stuff like monistat and the generic versions, you can buy them at any drug store but they are $15 or so. if you can't do that, you can try home remedies like yogurt (plain yogurt) in your vagina or garlic (used the same way, slightly crushed). i have heard people have had success with both of these, personally i'd use the yogurt.
there's a lot on this subject at the vaginapagina community.
yeast infections can go away on their own, but they may not, and you don't want to have a lingering yeast infection forever (you can also give it to your boyfriend if you have intercourse). most people misdiagnose when they try to self-treat yeast infections unless they have been evaluated by a doctor for one at least once before.
sexually transmitted infections have similar symptoms to yeast infections sometimes, but you wouldn't get them just by being fingered.

Correct. You can try an over the counter yeast infection treatment and see if that works, but if it's a BV or anything else you'll need to see a gynecologist and get proper treatment.

I had a bacterial infection once that was definitely itchy. Yeast was my doctor's first diagnosis, but since it wouldn't go away they made some tests and lo and behold! a nice Gardnerella infection.

Right on. Obviously anything's possible, but in general BVs don't tend to itch, IIRC.

Sorry to hear that. I just got my first yeastie in years. Damn I'd forgotten how uncomfortable they are.

Haven't had one in years, either. I just had that one bout of BV then soon after another infection which went away on its own so I never knew what it was. That was at least 3 years ago.
Hope it stays this way... I remember how annoying it was. Feeling the need to scratch in the most appropriate situations, and wondering what to put in there to relieve the burning and itching.

Yuck, I had one about a year ago, and it was horrible. I hope I don't have another for years. :P

you really do need to see a health professional about this. Planned Parenthood is really great, sliding scale so that it is affordable and nice people usually. Also they are HUGE on confidentiality!
There is even one in the tow you ahve listed as home on your profile, see? Here's their info:

i agree with everyon here that you need to see a doctor. infections of any kind are hard to diagnose for the first time. i would guess you have a bacterial infection, hence the smell along with the burning/swelling.

that being said, if you find you do have bacterial vaginosis (which is what it sounds like, i get the exact same symptoms), there is an alternative to antibiotics, which often aggravate the good bacteria in the vagina and cause yeasties or (worse) ineffectiveness of future antibiotic treatment.

i keep a bottle of acidophilous pills (live yogurt cultures) in my fridge (they need to be kept cold) and when i feel the itchy/burning/smelly stuff coming on, i take 2 pills each night and insert them into my vagina. people have told me repeatedly that this is a yeast infection treatment, but it has ALWAYS WORKED for me. my thought is that it re-balances the environment in the vagina and allows the good bacteria to effectively fight off the bad ones.

but again, PLEASE see a doctor so you know that's what it is. oh, and have the fingering individual wash and dry before the next session. ;)

Yeast and bacterial infections are very common, and are not always sexually related. It could be as simple as a bladder infection, but you won't know until you go to the doctor. Free clinic, make an appointment, tell your mom that you just don't feel well...but self-diagnosis/treatment will probably only make you worse, resulting in your parents asking why you didn't go to them in the first place. I always find that honesty is the best policy. "No, Mom, I haven't had sex, but I'm having this problem..." If you live in a cold climate, it could simply be that your overclothes don't breathe well enough while you walk in them.

Please go to the doctor.

I have been where you are. The things that I have found that helps is using soap and water to clean the outside, and then some sort of yeast infection rememdy. But most of the time just soaping up really well has been able to get rid of it. But it is really important to use a really gental soap (more like a facial) that is either made with oatmeal or sandelwood. Both won't harm the membrane when you wash and help with the whole matter. Some people might baulk at the whole soap thing, but if you use a really mild one then it will not hurt you.
Another thing that will help is not to touch it, outside of cleaning it, because the tendency is to itch it, and like a rash, it just makes the problem worse. Rubbing and scratching feels good at the moment, but have you noticed that it feels worse right after you do so?
Make sure that you are wearing 100% cotton undies. If you are wearing silk, satine (most true satin is cotton...), or any synthetic clothes like polyester, make sure that it has cotton panty lining because without the cotton then you are not getting the right kind of air flow, so things can fester. If you don't have any, I highly suggest that you get some because you don't want this to happen again. Air will help you a lot to combat the itchyness.
(That being said if you happen to work at a brewery, winery, or a bakery you are more seceptible to yeast infections because of the wild yeast in the air, which is why I get them a lot because I bake like a mad feind and lived in vineyards)
Causes of this problem can be as simple as enviroment and/or food intake. I eat a lot of yohgurt to keep it from happening anymore. I noticed that they happened when I was supposed to/have finished my period (when I was on depo and now after). But one thing that you said was that you got fingered and that it happened soon afterwards. Does your SO wash thier hands before they finger you? Because food and other stuff on thier hands or, if they are going down, in thier mouth will cause lots of unhappiness. That and if the guy, if it is a guy, still has thier forskin and has any crud, they go pee and get it on thier hands, don't wash....you get the idea. I always make my partners wash fefore the go anywhere near my bermuda triangle. You might want to double check from now on too.

Well other than give you something warm to put on when it is thirty below, sanatized undies to make sure that all the bacterium and yeast microbes are completely gone so that you don't reinfect. Unless you are always washing you delicates on hot-hot with bleach, you might not get rid of everything. Microwaving insures that everything is gone.

Have you been using any sort of feminine products lately? When I used to be on the patch, I was having a lot more discharge than normal, so I started using Kotex pantiliners for just everyday type stuff. Anyhow, I had an AWFUL allergic reaction to them and I had this bright pink rash all over. MAN did that ever itch...then of course when I touched it it BURNED... so I don't know if this is a possibility, but you may want to take a moment to make sure that you're not doing anything differently than normal (using different products, wearing a different sort of underwear, using some new kind of soap, etc.)

I'll just add to this real quickly on the soap topic, that the skin down there (like the skin around your eye) is different than the skin say... on your legs & stomach, for example. So just because a soap or lotion isn't irritating your skin OTHER places, you could still be sensitive to it in the no-no places.

i need advice
