New Here! :)

Just had a question in regards to pregnancy. My friend is thinking that she might possibly be pregnant, and she got in a fight about 2 weeks ago, being beat up pretty badly.. she suffered punches to her belly, some pretty low down and she even has bruises now. Also, she's not a frequent taker of birth control, but when she thought she might be pregnant, she began taking BC.. so now, she's taking BC and is complaining of breast tenderness etc.. She didn't start taking the BC till about a week after her last period, approx 2 1/2 weeks ago and so she's due for another period soon, but I'm just getting worried about her general health...

My question is, with the two factors combined (the fight and the BC), if she had been pregnant, would she have lost the baby?
Anyone?

I'm curious as to why she'd start taking bc when she thought she was pregnant. Has she taken a pregnancy test?

I'm such a paranoid person I would have already taken a test :) If she doesn't want to go to a doctor I'd suggest buying a box that has 2 tests and taking them. Sorry. That's my only suggestion.

No, don't have to wait for a missed period. Just 14 days after the sex in question.

I actually read that you do, I have taken a preg. test on a number of occasions and it always read on the package that the hormones will not show up indicating you are until after a missed period. There is also another *more sensitive* test now that can tell a little sooner than that, i dont recall what it is called.

That is because ovulation generally happens 2 weeks before your period.

Actually, BC won't harm the baby at all. It's not like it makes a bunch of ninjas appear in your uterus to kill shit. It just stops new eggs from being fertilized.

Bad news. If your friend is that uninformed, she shouldn't be having sex in the first place.

* Breast tenderness can be a side-effect of beginning the Pill. Unfortunately, it is also a classic sign of pregnancy. There's just no way to know without a test.

* If she's on BC, she's unlikely to get her period ... so if she is pregnant, the only way to know is to STOP the Pill immediately, and get a pregnanc test about 2 weeks later.

* The Pill doesn't act as an abortifacient unless taken in extremely large quantitites (the so-called 'Morning After Pill') and even then doesn't always work. (I know, I tried it myself and the pregnancy was completely unaffected.) What *is* likely to happen from continuing to take the Pill while pregnant, is that the baby will be bombarded with artificial hormones which will upset an extremely fragile balance. There are a number of possible outcomes to that, none of them good - but the baby is still likely to be born, just born with a *lot* of problems.

Please, advise your friend to cease the Pill immediately and seek a doctor's advice.

All I can suggest is that maybe you could find some literature about the Pill and pregnancy ... there is a fair bit around. Not knowing your local area, I'm not sure where you'd go, but at the very least your own doctor or school nurse would have that kind of info.

Maybe if she sees it looking "official" it might have a bigger impact ...

i disagree with your statement. someone asked a similar question and i had looked it up in some medical texts, and they stated no serious side effects from taking birth control while pregnant (depending on how long you took it, but most people i think would realize at a certain point), that there was a "possibility" that the hormones might have an effect, but not a very high probability. so be careful before you go scaring people that their babies will be born with serious defects.

if she hasn't had sex between her last period, and taking the pill for 7 days, she should be protected. (or if she had sex with a condom for the first 7 days of using the pill, which is still ok). the tests are cheap and easy. buy her one for $7 if you can and convince her to take it, and be safe from now on. avoiding a problem won't solve it, but it's good that she's doing something about this situation (getting on the pill) to help with any future concerns.

Alright, if she was preggers and she had gotten beaten up and it HAD affected her, she would have most likely seen spotting/bleeding of some sort, my mother miscarried and the bleeding was substantial. Yes, being hit may affect the child, but it would have to be extreme to cause a miscarriage.
Taking birth control WILL NOT cause her to miscarry either, but it will cause symptoms related to pregnancy (such as nausea, mood swings, breast tenderness etc) so it may actually be far more stressful to be doing what she's doing. Also, stress can cause a period to come late, so even if she doesn’t menstruate, advise her to get a test the moment she is late as it may simply be that.

Please take your friend to a doctor. Even if she isn't pregnant, she could have some serious problems from being beat up.
Also, some women's hormone levels can be very different from others. Since it may be too soon to take a urine pregnancy test, try to have her doctor administer a blood-drawn pregnancy test if possible. You can have more accurate results sooner.
Hope you find the help you need. You're a good friend for taking care of her like this.
