First if all. Id just like to tell you guys, this drug apo-megenamic is amazing! Its a persciption, but it totally helps with PMS and crmaps and stuff.
Me and my friends were bored and we were looking through our teachers desk and we say so mething that said OB on it, and i remember it has somethign to do with ike Feminismeness...So whats OB?
So we were thinking like a yeast infection med. BUt then we realised, we dont even really know what a yeast infection is. What is a yeast infection and how do you get one?
One more thing, When i wear pads, it sorta scrunches up on the sides and leaks onto my panties, is there anyway to prevent this?
Thanks in advance

OB has nothing to do with feminism! :-) it's a type of tampon that doesn't have the big bulky applicator part. so you just use your fingers to insert it. it saves a lot of space and garbage creation.
a yeast infection happens when the normal yeast that inhabits your vagina overgrows for some reason and takes over the healthy bacteria. you get a thick white discharge but most importantly you usually get vaginal itching. one of the biggest causes of a yeast infection is taking antibiotics because it kills some of that good bacteria and allows the yeast to take over.
last answer: for the pads - have you tried tampons? i would recommend menstrual cups, but you sound like you're new to this information so tampons are probably a good stepping stone. if you don't want to use tampons, you can get pads with wings that fold over the panty edges.
:-) any more questions, just ask!

Im not using a tampon, I think its like weird for a young girl (14) And thats the thing, I do use pads with wings, but i think i should go back to the ones that have velcro, they stay better.

Date: 2005-04-08 01:56 am (UTC)A yeast infection occurs when the natural balance of becteria in the vagina is disturbed. YEast can then grow uncontrolled and unchecked by the bacteria that normally eats it. Common Symptopms include some burning, strange discharge, different than normal healthy cervical mucous, that often has an odor and can look like cottage cheese or be discolored.
Maybe try to wear underwear with a wider crotch? Or use pads that have wings?

Date: 2005-04-08 11:38 am (UTC)Cause/prevention: Vaginal yeast infections are caused by Candida albicans (yeast), which, along with a few types of bacteria, are normally present in relatively small numbers in your vagina. Sometimes the yeast multiply rapidly and take over, causing an infection. this can be due to a change in the vaginal environment, injury, sexual transmission, condoms with nonoxynol-9, a spermicidal lubricant, can cause yeast infections (and a plethora of other problems. Stay away from spermicide of any kind when you become sexually active. It's just plain bad for the vagina.). Common environmental disruptions that favor yeast include increased pH, increased heat and moisture, allergic reactions, elevated sugar levels, hormonal fluxes, and reductions in the populations of bacteria that are normally present. Antibiotics are probably the leading cause of vaginal yeast infections in American women because say you take an antibiotic to cure your sinus infection-- the antibiotic kills the unwanted bacteria in your sinuses, BUT can also kill the "good" bacteria in your vagina, upsetting the balance of your vaginal ecosystem, allowing the yeast to take over. (antibacterial deodorant soap can have the same effect.) most women have problems with only a few types of antibiotics, or with prolonged antibiotic treatment. Others get yeast infections every time they take antibiotics. (that’s me!! it SUCKS.) Unfortunately, I know of no way of preventing an antibiotic-induced yeast infection; you just have to treat it once it starts. I get a diflucan pill with the antibiotics every time I need them. Non-cotton underwear can cause them because you sweating into something like polyester thats not breathable allows the bacteria to thrive in it. Wearing panty liners and changing frequently when wearing something polyester (like stockings or polyester underwear) is a wise idea.
Symptoms: so you can have that lovely discharge, an intense itching, burning sensation-- localized in your vagina and vulva. This itching is not always present, but can get really bad, so bad you can hardly walk, let alone ride your bike to the pharmacy or doctor to get it treated. Let me tell you... it SUCKS. It looks like clumpy nasty white stuff. most medical descriptions compare the discharge to ricotta cheese, but it can range from thick and not clumpy to faintly yellow to thin and clear and it smells like yeast. Even tho its not the same kind of yeast we use to make bread or beer.
Treating it: there are TONS of ways to treat theses nasty things. I however can use NONE of the over the counter products because I am just so lucky as to be extremely allergic to them. So creams and inserts made by Monistat don’t do me any good, however, they can help out plenty of other people :-). Some people try the home remedies such as plain yogeart, garlic cloves, tea tree oil, boric acid, potassium sorbate (used in brewing beer to stop the yeasts at the right time and in food to preserve it), gentian violet, and even cranberries. I've heard good things about all these. I, however, love the diflucan pill I get from the gyno :-) It's whatever YOU wanna do. So if you ever get one know you have tons of options and try your damn hardest to NEVER get one.
