I went in to see my doctor this morning, whilst I was there, I asked her this question, to get her professional opinion, as there seem to be contradicting answers. She said the following: the worst that can happen is that you keep getting yeast infections. Yeast infections themselves do NOT lead to bigger problems. However, the yeast infection may be a symptom of something else which could lead to bigger problems.
The problem with obtaining information, especially medical, from the internet is that, though the intentions are pure, the facts are sometimes skewed. I also realise that different doctors have different opinions, but seeing as my doctor is one of the top in her field at a women's hospital here in my city, I am going to trust her statement as being fact.
Now, with that said, it doesn't mean you shouldn't treat your yeast infection. It is true that there are no dangerous effects of not treating it, but they will get worse and last longer if you do nothing for it. It could get very uncomfortable for you, not to mention smelly and irritating.
Yeast infections are not so much a problem, though they can lead to sensitivity/soreness in the vaginal area which can make having sex a real bitch. Plus the itching just making you grumpy all day every day.
Bacterial infections, though, can be more problematic--once those puppies get out of control you're a prime candidate for a UTI, and an untreated UTI is a Very Bad Thing Indeed (it can lead to kidney infections and hospitalization).
oh shit. then i need to get this checked out. but i'm so scared of going to a gynocologist (sp?) and it would be reeeeeally weird to have some stranger look at my vagina, haha, you know?
It is weird for a stranger to be looking down there but it's very important you get checked out! I'm not even sure if they have to look down there to treat you for a yeast/bacterial infection. I had a UTI and I just had to pee in a cup and then she tested it.
i'm pretty sure they do have to look down there to check to see if i have a yeast/bacterial infection.. they have to do that pabst smear or however you spell it and other stuff.
Yes, the rule of thumb is a) get comfy with your pubes and having someone else look at them regularly and b) get everything checked out. ;) Seriously, there's nothing scary about a gynecologist--most of them are women and know what you are going through, particularly if you mention that you're nervous about it. You ain't got nothing they haven't seen before. ;)
