I went to the gyno today for my first pap smear. Is there any word for something being beyond painful? When it was all over I actually passed out on the table and had to have a trash can near my head in case I threw up. I was drenched in sweat and had no coloring to my skin. The doctor said I went into like hypershock or something...That has never, ever happend to me before. It was soooo horrible. Im really sore in my pelvic region where my uterus and ovaries are. Ugh.

Did anyone else have a bad first pap experience?

Oh my god, I'm so sorry that happened to you! Thank god you're alright now =) I've never had one before, so I can't tell you...but I hope my first one isn't that bad.

I've heard of women getting their doctor's to use smaller speculums. You might ask your doctor about that next time. and be sure to remind him/her that it was painful last time, so they can prepare for it.

I was too at the time of my first pap, being a virgin and all, but I had a rather pleasant experience. Nerves have a lot to do with it. My doc taught me breathing & relaxation exercises as she conducted the exam to keep me cool & collected while she was rummaging around in there.

I'm sorry your first experience was so terrible!

Hopefully, you were just sort of over worked up about it, and the initial shock of the exam got to you and the rest from now on won't be so bad :)

I'm sorry your first time was so bad!

Mine wasn't quite that bad... but I was worried to death. I've got a Hymen of Steel (three partners, and a semi-active sex life later), it's still here. My first time at the gyno was painful because it did NOT appreciate that metal object being jammed up. :P

I hope it gets easier for you from now on. :)

I had a hymen of steel for a while too. Then of all things to ruin its impressive track record, a tampon stole my "virginity."

Cruel, this womanhood business.

Mine was quite the opposite, I guess I was lucky. That's horrible, staying healthy should never come at such a toll on your body. I'm so sorry, no one should have to go through such trauma, especially not in a doctor's office!

One of my best friend's has this problem all the time because she has too many nerve endings in her cervix. Usually, there aren't many, if it all. She's just a little mutated. ;o)

With your experience, it sounds like it was combo of fear, and an intact hyman, with maybe more than usual nerve endings. The next time, perhaps you can tell the gyno and they can help you to relax beforehand, or give you something to calm down, like valium.

There is something about pain in that region that is super sensitive. I've managed to do ok with pap smears--it hurts, I bleed, but I don't go into shock--but I had a uterine biopsy last year that had me literally screaming and bellowing in the doctor's office. It didn't even hurt *that* bad, but something about pain from the cervix and uterus goes straight to the hysteria stage, and won't allow any control.

But wow I'm sorry you went through that. :( Definitely for your next one explain to your doctor that you passed out before from the pain and you need something to cut down on your anxiety beforehand. As you get older (and bigger) it won't be such a big deal, but you'll have to get through the learned panic response.

I have a friend who had kind of the same thing happen-- she said she made the doctor feel so bad (it was a male doctor too) because she was bawling the whole time. I'm sorry that happened to you and her. :-(

Yeesh. My first pap before I had intercourse (although had previously lost my hymen through foreplay of some sort), and it wasn't painful at all. She used a plastic one time use speculum, told me to relax and it was done in a jiffy. My second pap however, was a little more thorough, and she did a manual exam - that was more unexpected than anything all of a sudden this doctor has her finger up me! ;) Hopefully, you have smoother sailing next year. :)

Yowch, I'm sorry! How awful!

I had a hard time my first time too--also pre-intercourse, and I always have dry skin (including *ahem* in that area). Plus, the doc said (apologetically) that she thought she might have caught and pinched a bit of the skin on my labia in the speculum. I had to make her stop halfway through. It hurt a *lot.*

Second time, I was all braced for awfulness, and it was fine. Not a picnic, somewhat uncomfortable, but not *painful* at all, certainly. Talk about a sigh of relief!

(by then, I'd had sex, mind you...)
