I'm on Trivora, currently 4 pills into my 28-day pack. I'm going to visit my boyfriend for about a week, during which time I'm supposed to get my period. I'd really like to skip it, but I've never done this before---what would be the best way to do this in order to prevent breakthrough bleeding? Occasionally, only a couple times, I've started my period the evening after taking my last active pill, and if this could be prevented in any way I'd be quite happy. I heard from a friend I could take a pack backwards, but she didn't understand why, had just heard it from someone, and I'm reluctant to follow her advice without any confirmation...your thoughts? It's safe pregancy-wise to just skip the placebo week, right?

Thanks!!

i don't quite understand what you mean by take a pack backwards, but yes it's safe to skip the placebo pills. they are only there to help you remember to take a pill every day. i have loads of other pills to swallow every night so sometimes i just take out the white placebo and throw it in the trash 'cause i can't be bothered swallowing it.

if you're not doing it every time, it's probably not going to hurt if you go straight into the next pack for just one cycle. it may increase the chances of breakthrough bleeding, but I know plenty of people who've done it without even that.

If you'd like to skip your period and are on a monophasic pill, then just start the new pack when you would take your first placebo pill. However, if you are on a triphasic pill, you take the next pack backwards, as your friend said.

The issue is that with a triphasic pill, each week the level of hormones increases, and if you were to start the new pack at its beginning, you'd drop back down to the level of the first week. This can cause breakthrough bleeding. Instead, start you're next pack with week three (123321 instead of 123123) so that you're don't experience such a jump in hormone levels. (You still might experience some bleeding, but this is the way to go about trying to avoid it.)

Another way to go about this if you plan on skipping periods (which is safe, by the way), is to have more than one pack open at a time. Take week 1 of pack 1, then week 1 of pack 2, week 2 of pack 1, week 2 of pack 2, etc., (112233). If you know you have a vacation or something coming up, you can put off your period and take the hormones gradually.
