Jul. 5th, 2005 02:49 pmI looked back in the memories, and I didn't see this, so...
I'm planning to get an IUD (ParaGard or other such non-hormonal type) in about a month, and I'm also considering using a Keeper or similar menstrual cup. My question is, would they interfere with each other at all? I know that the Keeper is only in the vaginal canal and an IUD is placed inside the uterus, but I remember reading that sometimes IUDs and tampons can be tricky goings.
Any knowledge or experiences to share?

Date: 2005-07-05 08:42 pm (UTC)since i got my mirena in march, i haven't actually had to use a tampon or my keeper because my flow has just been spotting on and off. so i don't have direct experience. but the official word is that it's supposed to be okay. if you're a childless young woman who is worried about a more significant possibility of expelling, maybe you'd want to take every precaution, i don't know.
i'm sure that tampons would really be fine though. i mean, clearly if there was a problem with tampons they would have to tell you about it when they insert the IUD, because it would be a major problem since everyone uses tampons. however i haven't heard anything about this. also, it just logically doesn't make sense to me because there are really just these very thin fishing-line type strings up by your cervix and i don't think a tampon or anything else for that matter could really have much effect on them. do a google image search for "IUD" or "paragard" and you'll see what i mean.

Date: 2005-07-05 10:51 pm (UTC)Young? By some standards (I'm 23) :-P Childless? Nope, have my beautiful one-year-old son, born via C-section :) I was asking because A.) I REALLY want an IUD because I HATE using condoms with my husband, and also HATE what hormones do to my body, and B.) I'm considering using a Keeper because... well... *slight blush* my husband enjoys sex on my period, if you get my drift... *blush again* TMI, I know, sorry...
Thanks for the comment :)

Date: 2005-07-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(joking aside though, young in terms of IUD insertion is i believe defined as under 21 - the younger you are, the more likely you are to expel, but the risk is still pretty small)
i'm sure you'll do fine with an IUD. come join iud_divas if you haven't already! it's a nice community.
and i hope you don't think discussing sex on your period is TMI in the menstrual hut! :-)
