I was wondering ... what all can happen if you have unprotected sex while on your menstral cycle ...

I know it helps with cramps ...
But, what about getting pregnant?
Can you be pregnant and have a cycle (within the first few weeks of pregnancy that is)?

These are just a few things I was wondering about lately.
I mean, im on my cycle right now but I started 5 days late when I usually start 3-5 days early because of my birth control pills. But, I finall started (late) on Wednesday night. That morning and afternoon, me and my boyfriend had sex like 4 or 5 times and each time he got off. But, Since that Sunday, I hadn't been taking my actually birth control pill ... I was taking the last row of pills which are iron pills (thats what the doc told me) ... I have the pack where I have 4 weeks ... the 1st 3 are blue (birth control pills) and the last row are white (the iron pills).

Anyway ... im rambling.
I would love to have a kid.
I don't have the money and im going through a REALLY rough spot ... but ... I have been thinking about it lately ... and ... never mind ...

If anyone can answer my questions or at least give me some info on it ... I would GRATEFULLY appreciate it.

Krystal

technically, you can't get pregnant when you are on your period, unless you ovulate again super fast after you're finished bleeding, which isn't likely to happen AND there's sperm somehow still hanging around by then. do some reading on the stages of the menstrual cycle. not everyone ovulates around day 14. a good book is toni weschler's taking control of your fertility. great stuff.

If your question is whether you could be pregnant and still have a period, this may help: http://www.babycentre.co.uk/periods

Okay, I'm going to probably say some things you don't like right now.

You aren't even 19 yet.

Are you prepared to spend over 400,000 dollars the next 18 years of your life, even more if you support your child through college?

You are so young to be considering getting pregnant.

Your chances of conceiving while menstruating are very, very, very slim. But it can happen.

I suggest you reprioritize why you want a baby right now and start using condoms until you can actually provide properly for a child.

That is true. haha.

That's what I get for skimming and commenting so late.

I was just concerned about this comment:

"I would love to have a kid.

I'm sure she knows all that shit, and if I she didn't your attacking/judgemental way of posting it wouldn't of helped convince the girlie.

I'm sure she also consciously wanted some sort of response about wanting a baby. Otherwise, she wouldn't have typed it at all.

And I wasn't attacking her, or even being judgemental.

I was just was making a point as to how selfish it is to have a child when you can't properly care for it.

'selfish' is a judgement.

you jumped straight in, and accused her of planning a baby RIGHTTHISVERYSECONDOMG!!!!! and completely missed that she was on the Pill.

sounds like an attack _and_ a judgement to me.

Perhaps you should let the OP get angry if she wants.

This had absolutely nothing to do with you.

And maybe you shouldn't comment without knowing anything about the person making the "judgement" to begin with.

i totally agree with you. people attack ME when i make similar comments. it just bothers me to see these GIRLS having sex and they can't even afford a baby... or even mentally 'afford' it either... th ey're too young. some of them can't even SPELL the word 'pregnant'!! It's a shame... poor kids.

I know. If anything, I'd like to think it might help put things into perspective for them.

I wasn't bashing her, just saying. Realistically, it isn't a good idea.

the Pill is designed to be your sole form of protection, so it shouldnt matter when you have sex without a condom - as long as you're taking your Pill correctly (same time every day, one Pill per day etc) you should be ok.

however, i think there _is_ a chance that you can get pregnant soon after your period.

Getting pregnant on your period is theoretically unlikely. It's also a very obvious thing to think that, so lots of women have had sex during their period because they thought they were safe. A small number of them get pregnant regardless. It can happen, so do make sure you're covered at all times.

If you are on the pill, you are equally protected at all times, including during the non-hormonal pills at the end of the pack. Your chances of getting pregnant during that last week are the same as your chances of getting pregnant at any other time, which is to say, excrutiatingly low.

If you are not on the pill, it is possible for you to get pregnant by having sex during your period, depending on the length of your menstrual cycle and the length of your period. If you aren't using hormonal BC and you don't want to get pregnant, you should use some kind of contraceptive (a condom or a diaphragm or whatever) absolutely every time that you have sex.

Actually, I believe that effectiveness rates for the Pill are 95%. (I'm talking about actual effectiveness rates, which is what counts; how effective they are in the lab is of limited use.) It's mostly down to human error, and there's a high chance of human error in this type of method, as with condoms (whereas with Depo, for instance, as long as you're not late for your quarterly shot, there's nothing much that can go wrong). These rates will vary according to the age of the user, though as far as I know there's been no research done on this. Younger women are going to be higher risk because they're more fertile and less experienced in using the methods. It's terribly easy to miss a pill one day, or drink too much and throw up, or have a tummy bug.

In other words, I'd strongly recommend using a backup method of contraception if you're worried about pregnancy. I think that everyone who isn't trying for a baby should use condoms, anyway: any idea how high the STI rates are? More than 1 in 10 young people have chlamydia where I live (Scotland), most of them haven't even heard of it (it often doesn't cause visible symptoms), and it's one of the leading causes of infertility. I'd guess that the STI rates would be higher in America, since the teenage pregnancy rates are much higher.

I seem to always be the exception to every rule. If there's a 3% chance something will happen to me, most of the time it does... so I can't say that I'm very cautious knowing how bad my luck is (I only use bcp's - no condoms now that I have a bf again) and I'd be surprised if I got pregnant but not completely baffled.

In fact a woman I worked with got pregnant on BCP's (this was 22 years ago, of course) and she was using them properly, so I know it happens.

I have had three successful pregnancies... two out of three were concieved on the last 1-2 days of my period. However, I ovulate quickly (I have a 21 day cycle sometimes) and I bleed for seven days.
The only one that was conceived while I wasn't bleeding was the week I missed (yes, missed, not having waited three months like they say it takes to actually wear off once missing the shot) my Depo Provera shot.
I miscarried another that was conceived while I was in the last couple of days of my period.
I'm not a member of this community but thought I'd mention...
Yes! It is possible!
It has happened to me... three times.
