I went to the gyno for the first time about a month ago to get birth control. She gave me Yasmin and advised me to use the "Sunday Start". I got my period today, and I think I'd rather use the "First Day Start" instead.
I'm confused. Once you start taking your pills do you take them without interruption or do you have to wait for a period of time before you start your next pack? Also, once you start taking your "sugar pills", do you take them until you have taken the last one or do you stop taking them once your period has stopped? Could someone please help me? Sorry, I know the answers might be obvious, but I'm pretty confused.

Thanks so much to anyone who replies!

You take pills without interruption, one pill a day at the same time every day. When you finish your sugar pills, you start the next pack the day after you take the last sugar pill. Read the insert that came with your perscription as well, it shold help to answer your questions.

Also, if your gyno advised you to use the Sunday start method, I'd stick with that. So this Sunday, take your first pill, take one every day at the same time until the pack is gone. Before you run out, renew your perscription at the pharmacy (call/go in a few days before you'll run out), and pick it up either Saturday or Sunday before you're scheduled to take your first non-suagr pill.

P.S., some people might not take the sugar pills, simply because that's all they are, However, if you're likely to forget to start taking the hormonal pills if you're not taking a pill every day anyway, then definitely do take the sugar pills.

What she just said with an adamant direction to read your pill pack pamphlet thoroughly and I strongly recommend that you call your gyno's office and have them instruct the pharmacy to give you a three-to-four month supply of pills with each renewal.

And a strong admonission to make sure you save the insert from a pill pack in a safe place where you won't lose it so you can refer to it when you need to, like when you miss a pill.

As has already been said, you should read through the insert that comes with the pills, to learn, among other things, information like what to do if you forget a pill; it's better to know that information before such a thing happens, and to have the insert to check when you do need that information to make sure you got it correct.

Also, when I was on a pill, I didn't always take the sugar pills, as they really are just there to help with remembering when to start the next pack. The sugar pills are the time between the other pills.

Your doctor probably advised you to do a Sunday start because it means that you will be taking pills in accordance with the days printed on the blister card. If you prefer a first day start, I see no reason that you couldn't do that. Your pill probably comes with stickers that you can use to correctly mark the days of the week for however you take the pills.

Once you start taking pills, take one every day until you have taken every single one, then start a new pack. This includes the sugar pills, if you decide to take them. Some women do not take the sugar pills. This is up to you, as long as you can remember to start the new pack on time. If you wish to skip your period for any reason, begin a new pack of pills on the day you would have started taking sugar pills.
