My period is running a bit late (one day haha), but I expected that this month. Even though I expected it I am of course a little worried, I just can't help it. But a thought crossed my mind which is important. I know medication can effect your BC. I recently started taking a generic brand of claritin for allergies, it never occured to me to check if this would have an effect on my BC because I can't see any reason why it would. Its silly to assume such a thing. I'm planning on stopping by and asking a pharmacist, but I figured someone here might already know.

Does claritin effect BC?

Lauren

it's not silly to check - some medications _do_ interact with bc (some antibiotics/st john's wort etc) and it's always better to be safe than sorry ;)

i dont remember claritin having an effect on bc, but definitely ask a pharmacist (and please post back, i'd like to know!).

I don't know about its interaction with BC, but I do know that when I was taking claritin and antidepressants I came out in big purple blotches (I wish I were kidding...)

I was on Claritin and bcps for years, and no one ever told me there was an interaction between the two.

I've been on various types of allergy meds and bcps over the years, and I've never had a problem. Just makes my skin horribly dry. =P
Also, running a day "late" is completely normal, even on BC. Don't worry about it. =)

I understand, paranoia and are close friends. =P I start to worry several days before it's even supposed to start!

I used to be on Claratin and birthcontrol (no bc anymore.) I never asked about specific interactions, but having had several different university health centre docs over the years, who always asked what else I taking before renewals, I can tell you Claratin never raised any warnings from any of them. Claratin is also over the counter in Canada, so it's probably a fairly common combination.

I am REALLY glad you asked this question... I've been pondering the same thing for a few weeks ago.
