Hi, I hope I can get some advice about this. I'm looking to start birth control ASAP as I have become sexually active. BUT, my period is very very irregular and comes maybe once every 2 months if that. I used to take Provera to induce it awhile ago. Although I have been using protection during sex (condoms), do you think it would be okay that I just start taking the Provera to induce a period to get on birth control? Does anyone have any related experiences or advice? Thanks!

congratulations for such a sensible decision :)

you dont have to be on a period to start birth control - you'll just need to use backup for the first 7 days.

hormonal birth control is a bit trial-and-error so dont be afraid to change Pill/method, just be aware that it usually takes about 3 months for your body to become used to the levels of hormones.

please mention your menstrual irregularities to your doctor/nurse (you didnt say how old you are).

the best thing would be to see your doctor or PP again, and to explain that your periods dont come regularly but that you want to start birth control.

You can just start taking BC pills at anytime during the month. You just have to read the information enclosed with your packet to detertmine how long you'll need to wait to stop using backup protection.
