EDIT: I think I should have included the following information before I posted this, but here it is anyway. I took Emergency Contraception last week Monday after sex with a condom and also other times without condom and the withdrawal method. I asked Plannned Parenthood where I got the EC from whether I could start birth control and said I had to wait for my period. That's why I'm asking for advice on whether I should take Provera because I am really scared and tired of waiting! Also, I don't have a regular ob gyn (i'm a poor student) and I only go to PP when necessary...

Hi, I hope I can get some advice about this. I'm looking to start birth control ASAP as I have become sexually active. BUT, my period is very very irregular and comes maybe once every 2 months if that. I used to take Provera to induce it awhile ago. Although I have been using protection during sex (condoms), do you think it would be okay that I just start taking the Provera to induce a period to get on birth control? Does anyone have any related experiences or advice? Thanks!

if you used condoms, why did you need EC?

and i stand by my previous advice. but if you're concerned, then ask PP - they're the experts :)

Don't most people like to have a back up plan if the condom splits?

I don't believe you have to wait for your next period before you can use birth control: I certainly didn't when I started to take birth control - I was just told to use other protection for seven days while it kicked in. If its to make sure you're not pregnant can they not just do a test?

In that case we're either miss understanding something or this is all an halucination,

either way we suggest

Talk to the nurse and dicuss what kind of pill / patch etc would best suit you and about your period, she'll understand.

I would talk to the planned parenthood people about this--they know better :-) Also, if you're at school, often the school will have a health center with free or reduced-cost care; I know mine did and it was pretty good for standard outpatient procedures like this. Best of luck!
