Hello, my name is Sara, I'm 16 and new. I have the weirdest cycle, and I need to vent and ask y'all about whether I should go on a pill or something.

I haven't had my period since the end of September. I'm not sexually active, but I have been slightly stressed due to my Chemistry class (who needs chem, anyhow?). Also, I know that when I stop my work out schedule, my cycle gets very messed up. I play highschool tennis in the fall, but that ends in mid-October, and as soon as it stopped, I just dropped everything and became lazy--I guess that could be why. But I just started winter track, and I'm expecting a visit from the period fairy around the 20th, which is about the time my period would be coming (it's usually around the end of the month.) Mom said that she wanted to take me to the gyno, but doesn't want me on the pill because she gets the idea that it causes breast cancer.

Do you think I should wait it out? I mean, this has happened before (two summers ago, period went missing for 2-3 months, and last year around this time it was missing, but it became regular for the rest of the year up until now). Now that I wrote this post, I just realized that this is kind of regular for myself, and I shouldn't be worried, it'll show up again. SOS.

I'd wait it out, personally. Your body isn't really doing anything abnormal. You've changed exercise habits, have stress, probably eating habits (since your tennis season ended).

A reaction to these things from your body is not that strange. If you haven't had it in a few weeks, consider going to a gyno to see if he/she will run blood tests to rule out problems. It is okay to tell a doctor that you don't want a medication they offer.

Your body doesn't need to be on a rigid regular cycle.

Firstly:

Your period can be irregular for up to the first 2 and 1/2 years of having it. If it stays much more irregular after that, go see a doctor. I did the same and he suggested going on the pill for a few months. It helped sort out my cycle.

Secondly:

Your mum is wrong about the breast cancer. Microgynon 30 (the most common pill you can get) can actually help reduce the likelyhood of getting breast cancer. The one thing it can do is increase the likelyhood of thrombosis if you smoke whilst taking the pill.

Thirdly:

What Erinmdmd said. Sport and stress can mess you up.
