[identity profile] rooster-flag.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] menstrualhut
first post here, i have a few questions: i've heard that women who live in close quarters menstruate together because of hormones being given off or something. is this right? i'm sure this has been explained already, maybe a link to a past post?

also, say i'm living with my boyfriend, who is bisexual with some effeminite mannerisms. could this mean his hormone levels are closer to a woman's than a heterosexual man's would be? we seem to both get irritable at around the same time of the month, when i'm PMSing. could he be... PMSing too?

Effeminite mannerisms are societly learned... you aren't shy or giggly or fashion-crazed because of hormones. If he's bi, then that simply means he can enjoy either male or female company...it doesn't mean he has to act a certain way. Gay men can be either masculine or feminine based on their personalities and the traits they pick up.
My husband (who is also bi, and very masculine) gets irritable at the same time I do. First of all, if you're close to anyone, they can tell how you're feeling and they're feelings change in response to that. Secondly, in all adult human males hormone levels fluctuate. This can be on a weekly, monthly, or otherwise not-easily-discernable cycle. That includes straight males.

Ahah, I like to call it IMS (Irritable Men Syndrome) and my friend actually calls PMS Pissy Mother Syndrome. Even though..his mom isn't exactly the nicest lady on the planet, pre menstrual or not.

Personally, I think PMS is a load of crap. I know hormones effect your emotions..but why on Earth would we our bodies WANT us to be bitchy when we're supposed to be attracting the other sex to reproduce during that time? Hmm..

Most of us ovulate opposite our periods in the cycle, so bitchiness before/during menstruation wouldn't be during the fertile time for most women. Just a thought.

My husband theorized that I got way moodier the week before, and I assumed it was manly bullshit jumping to comclusions. I started charting my symptoms & cycle, and yep, he was sooo right. It was actually helpful to me to know it was hormonal cycles. Helped me deal:)

i found this at http://www.the-clitoris.com/n_html/n_period.htm

"In the absence of man-made light, a woman's menstrual cycle will synchronize with the phases of the moon. When this happens, ovulation occurs when the moon is full and menstruation starts with the start of a new moon. Women who live together experience a synchronization of menstrual cycles as a result of being exposed to chemicals contained in their sweat. A study found that if the sweat of one woman was placed under the nose of another woman on a regular bases, their periods would synchronize within three months, even if the women did not physically meet or come near each other."

and i found this at http://www.angelfire.com/md2/simianline/AnosmiaFacts1.htm

"Researchers once put the sweat of other women under the noses of 10 women at regular intervals. It took three months for the women to begin menstruating at the same time as the women whose sweat they were smelling."

that's cool... for a while my cycle was totally in sync with lunar phases. except i'd get my period on the full moons & ovulate closer to the new moons.
