My school clinic doctor sent me to a gyno in Daly City to discuss an endometriosis diagnosis via procedure since I've been in so much pain. It was my first visit with a female gyno (mine had been the same man who my mother had seen since she first started and who had delivered me, but was on the East Coast). When I gave her my sexual history, she raised her eyebrow and said, "Is that how *you people* do it?" Then she proceeded to tell me that I only thought I had endo (despite being told by 2 other doctors that I did) and that I was a slut who had gotten either chlamydia or P.I.D. and prescribed me antibiotics. Then she gave me a pelvic ultrasound despite the fact that I'd had one the day before (it was in my chart)... and proceeded to put in a NuvaRing without explaining to me what it was. She didn't describe side-effects, didn't ask me if I wanted it, and threw away the box (I managed to pick it out of the garbage, so I'd at least know what I was dealing with). Then she shuffled me out of her office. I was in severe discomfort until I could hobble over to the school clinic the next day to have the ridiculous thing removed (keep in mind, I've been in so much pain and so sensitive that the pelvic exam was fairly painful). I've got an appointment with a different ob/gyn on Monday... but girls; BE CAREFUL WHO YOU SEE! I'm learning the hard way that not all doctors are kind, helpful sorts.

Um... I would register a complaint with your state's medical board. There are so many violations of medical ethics in your story, she should, at the very least be on notice from the board.

In fact, it sounds to me like she might have even done a few things deserving of a malpractice suit. I'm not a litigious person, but that broad should have known better than to do any of that crap. It's inexcusable.

You will file a complaint, won't you? She passed major judgment on you in a very uncompassionate way AND administered medication (nuvaring) without your consent. And did she have ANY labwork to base the chlamydia/PID diagnosis on? COMPLAIN in writing.

I'm so sorry you had to go through something like that. I hope you can find a better doctor.

That sounds so counter to what a doctor is supposed to be! I'm shocked that this happened, and am so sorry she did this to you. Not professional at all.
Do file a complaint, and hope you have a better doc next time.

I won't let a doctor examine me until I've interviewed them about some of their attitudes and treatment regimes for x and y ... without ever saying that I actually have expectations. If they don't come up to my standards, I high tail it out of there.

seriously, do everything in your power to be heard about this and report this doctor, because the more doctors that get away with this behaviour, the more people like you end up having to deal with them :(

good luck with another doc!

Please, please report this.

THere are, I"m sure, many others that might have gone through this themselves with this same doc and are scared to come forward. That whole story is just horrendous and if it was me I would sure be high-tailing it to a lawyer.......

Please do report her to the medical board in your state. Also, if she's affiiliated with a particular institustion, send a complaint to its administrator. Make sure you talk to the school clinic doctor who sent you there so that he/she knows what crappy treatment students are getting. That's important.

You might also want to consider calling the police. What she did by giving you medcine against your wishes is obviously unethical but it might also be illegal in your area. I'm glad you know that you deserve better treatment than what you got and I hope your next doctor is totally wonderful.

i would send a letter of complaint not only to her practice but to the state medical board. she was completely unethical and you cannot administer medicine to a patient a) without consent b)without giving an explanation of side effects so you can watch for any adverse reaction and c) she needed to run test to make sure her diagnoses was correct or incorrect and warrent the use of any meds she chooses.

i work in the medical field and we are supposed to treat patients in a way that will not jepordize them to any further health problems and treat them with respect. by passing judgement based on her personal views she not only disrespected you but she put you in a position where you could have had an adverse reaction to the nuvaring and not have known what to look for, leaving you open to some very serious problems.

please do file a complaint with the board and cc it to her practice.

My biggest thing is working up the balls to tell a doctor NO. You really just have to stand your ground and refuse treatment until you are satisfied with the care you're recieving. If I go to a doctor for the first time and don't like the way the receptionist treats me I'm OUT OF THERE.

And definitely report them. No doctor should ever be administering drugs or treatment without your consent unless your life is in immediate danger. EVER.
