Hmm.. I don't know if this is the right place to ask.. but can I just go to the doctor and ask for birth control and he'll just give it to me? How does that work? Like.. will he ask if I want it because I'm sexually active or what? I mainly just want it to regulate my period though and I've been thinking about having sex so I guess I want to be prepared for that. It's just kind of awkward asking him I guess. Uhh.. yeah sorry if this is a stupid question. I just don't know where else to ask?

I went to the doctor awhile ago because my periods barely came and I wanted to get regular and I told him like how long ago I got my period and how irregular they were, and then he gave me some pills to get my period (i had to take it for 5 days i think) and then he gave me birth control.

Basically the same for me. Except he just told me the side effects of the birth control I'm on (Tricyclen) and told me that I had to start it yesterday.

Offered...well ok for you, mine normally forces me by hearling abuse at me.

There are a lot of other ways to regulate periods (technically hormonal birth control does not regulate anything) and as birth control.

I second what the other person has said, I cannot go to the doctor without being offered it...

I talked to my GP about seeing an OBG to get a baseline done (high risk for female cancers) and then at the OBG's office, they asked if I wanted to go on it. I said "Sure I'll try it." It's been over three months. Beware though, it may take some time to find one that works for you.

I'd call in and ask for an appointment for advising on birth control. You might want to go to an OB/GYN or Planned Parenthood or something, as they're a little more specialized, but if you trust that your general practitioner will be well informed enough, it's fine to go to them, too. You almost certainly will have to go through a pelvic exam, but that's really not as tramatic as you might think. With mine, she was poking around down there for 5 minutes, tops. If it's your first one, just tell them, and they should be pretty nice about it :)

I see you're from Canada, and I'm not sure about the privacy laws there, but if it's anything like in the US (and I assume it is, as Canada's a pretty awesome country when it comes to civil rights), they can't tell anyone anything about your appointment without your express permission. So if you're worried about your parents or whoever finding out, that should set your mind at ease.

Also, while you're in, ask them about your irregular periods. They would probably have more personalized advice than a bunch of strangers in a livejournal community ;)

Good luck! :)

I got my BC prescribed at my gyno's, so I don't know what it would be like getting it at the regular doctor's. But the gyno will ask whether you're sexually active, will need to know what your periods are like, etc.--not at all to be judgemental, just to help find the right thing for you. But whether you go to a doctor or a gyno, it shouldn't be awkward--it's their job to answer these kinds of requests! They do it for so many people it's perfectly normal to them.

well, you have to go to a gyno
they asked me if i thought about it
and when i said yea, they had asked
if i was sexually active..but they don't
tell anyone anyways, and they might not ask.
and they'll just give it to you. They didn't
even talk to my mom about it. lol

About 98% of doctors will make you have a pelvic exam first.
