Welcome :o)

With IUD's the chances of getting one at your age is slim, I got mine at 23 and even then it is because I forced the clinic to give one to me as my doctor stopped me from using anything else - was not a fan of abstinence. I hate mine, but that's more for personal reasons, apart from constant spotting I have not had too much hassle, ok well not in comparison to my other options.

There are still risks – there were big risks that set everyone up in a fuss about how dangerous they are, they improved safety that then set everyone up in a fuss about how safe they are – so I do think it is hard to get an accurate idea in those terms, but by large they do not like to put IUD's in women who have not yet had children or are below a certain age because of risks.

You might be better off asking about IUD's in [livejournal.com profile] iud_divas they are a nice lot, obviously pro-IUD's but they can give you whatever information you need.

My mom wanted me to do the same but my doctor pretty much said no. Plus it's a huge expense and it does involve minor surgery to have it implanted.

I'm sure your doctor can tell you specifically why they advise against it at your age. My mom and I decided that since IUD's weren't really an option the next best thing would be to use the patch (which I did for about a year) and now you have the option of the ring as well. They're almost as fool-proof and not quite such a commitment.

I got one when I was about 26 or 27 and was engaged to be married so the nurses at the sexuality clinic didn't have any issues about me getting one as they knew I was in a comitted relationship. I love mine and am on #2 (since giving birth to my son 10 months ago...and I had taken out the IUD to get pregnant). It very much suites my sexual needs in terms of being able to be spontaneous. However, at your age I wouls recommend condoms plus something else for birth control. Or if you do get an IUD, use condoms so that you have less worry about STD's.

That's why I switched to an IUD...tired of taking hormones and wanting my body to reset. I hope you find what works best for you :) Just remember to research all your options before selecting one. That's how I decided what was right for me!

I got one after I had my daughter. I am 20. But my doctor refuses to give IUDs to non-mothers. The rate of the IUD expelling is higher with women who have not had children. I hated my IUD and eventually had it removed and went back to the terrible pill a day. I had bleeding off and on for 8 months, and it just kept getting worse. I would have what I thought was a period (basically heavier bleeding) whenever. I was unregular. I am normally very regular, every 28 days. But with the IUD I never knew what was going to happen and I had bleeding all the time, so I had to wear a pad EVER DAY. It sucked. I started getting terrible cramps, and it hurt to have sex. that is when I decided I wanted it OUT.

I am not trying to scare you away from it. For some women, it works. But I think you should have all points of view on this. Also I had a mirena. www.mirena.com You may want to check that out. Or possibly think about the nuva ring? Not totally sure on that thing, but you insert it yourself.

Strangely, at the age of 19 I was OFFERED an IUD by my family planning clinic (UK if that helps), and offered again at 20. I haven't had any children so that mothers only need apply thing doesn't count.

They did however say they would ony give it to me if I was in a monogogamous (spelling never my strong point!) relationship / or willing to use condoms as well because the risk of complications with infection is much worse.
