I remember once when I was little, long before I was concerned with such things, my mother was saying it's healthy to sleep naked from the waist down now and then. I think she meant when you were on your period (obviously this would mean sleeping on some towels.)

Just wondering if this was true?

ack i would never sleep without a tampon in. theres no way i could deal with the crime scene.

that said.

i'm so accustumed to sleep naked from the waist down that often enuf if i fall asleep with panties or boxes i'll wake up in the morning to find them crumpled at the bottom of the bed.

but

when i'm bleeding its always with a tampon.

I don't think there are any obvious health benefits, although I have my opinions about the health benefits of not using tampons at all. I used to do that sometimes before I got my divacup.

I would just fold a towel in half and put it under my hips, and in the morning I'd need a shower, but it wasn't too messy, and it was nice to not have to worry about TSS or leaking out of my pad and all over my panties and bed :)

My mom said that too for the same reason. I dunno. I wouldn't do it on my period, but sometimes a few days after when I'm a bit sticky and re-balancing from bleedng, I sleep naked from the waist down and it seems to speed up getting back to normal.

I also usually change from my nice (silk/mesh/microfiber/lacy)panties into boring cotton panties when I sleep, because anything else makes me sticky and icky.

I think that comes from the idea that women's genitals are stinky and dirty. Unless you like to spend $$$$ on sheets and bedding I wouldn't do it while on your period. It does feel nice on a hot summer night with cool cotton sheets though.

lol @ 'obviously'

It may be because women used to wear layer upon layer of clothing, then when latex rubber was invented some undergarments were basically a sheet of fabric-covered rubber, very restrictive stuff. And of course you can get some interesting skin problems when you don't let some air in, ringworm for one can go crazy when skin is unhappy. Undergarments nowadays would probably feel like cheescloth to women in the past. And I'm talking up through the 70's here not just last century.

I knew a woman who wore panties, bra, full length gown to bed every night, even in summer. The only difference in summer was she wore a short sleeved night gown.

I couldn't handle it on my period...just too gross. However, I find that sleeping totally nude, or with just a long t-shirt on, can work wonders for me, especially the week after my period. I find it makes me feel much cleaner in that area.

I don't think she meant during your period, but I've heard that it's good to sleep with no underwear and no pants, so that the skin can breathe.
I've also heard other people say that you should go without underwear whenever possible, but I'm not sure how necessary it is to go without underwear to let the skin breathe. IMO, as long as you wear cotton underwear (which is breathable), it should be fine.

My mom used to tell me this too, but not during your period. She meant it (and told me so) that occasionally it is good to prevent/avoid/help heal yeast infections (as I am dealing with one right now) and the like. Just like you let your baby run around barebottom occasionally after being cooped up in pampers all day long, it's the same concept.

Even in cotton underwear, it can get stifling down there for her at times, and its good to let her have some fresh air. I, personally, wouldn't do it while having a visit with Aunt Flo..unless a tampon was in place...but I do it occasionally throughout the month (except when ovulating, as there tends to be "egg white" discharge)
