Too soon

arghgh. Mainly I am here to vent, I hope that is OK.

My boyfriend and I have been separated by several state lines for a month now, and on saturday he's flying back into town. I have been depressed about not being able to spend time with him over the holidays, and it didn't help that my period was scheduled to arrive the day after he got back (I'm on the pill). But at least I was comforted by the fact that we would have that one night with no bleeding to complicate things.

Now my period has started two days early and I'm totally bummed. It seems so random and unfair to me (not to mention I have really harsh periods). I guess I want to know how other women cope when their cycle gets inconvenient like this. Can anybody relate? Am I taking this way too hard?

I've also heard that "instead cups" are good products to use to be able to have sex while you are menstruating.

And to add to the comment above...sex in the shower always works :)

In my experience just being around my boy after a long absence, even if I am ragging hard and feeling like crap, overrides the feeling like crap enough for fun. Don't sweat it too badly :)

Yeah, I can relate. I used to really freak out about having sex on my period, and for some reason that's when I tend to be most horny.

But you *can* have sex during your period. I know that for some women, it affects the sex drive, or how much you enjoy it, but if that's not a problem for you there are ways around it.

A hot bath to clean up right before will help minimise the blood flow. Or...not much help this time, but for the future you could look into getting a diaphragm. They're for birth control, but they work by creating a seal over the cervix - if semen can't get in, blood won't get out. Just be prepared for a bit of a flow when you remove it.

Also, there are plenty of sexy things you could do with your boyfriend that don't involve penis-in-vagina. As long as he's not going to be juvenile and grossed out about it, just use a tampon and have fun.

get some sea sponge tampons! pop one in before sex, lube yourself up and go at it! just make sure you're comfortable fishing around in your vagina for the sponge afterwards. i've found that most guys can't feel the difference when i have mine in (i've had 3 different boyfriends i've tried it out with, none have even felt it, even when i told them).

and i totally sympathize. i don't MIND having sex on my period, but it's kind of annoying to have to clean up afterwards, and it's kind of itchy after a while...bleh.

periods happen, they're one of those "part of life" things :P your body doesn't care if that's the only day you're seeing your boyfriend. In future, you could try stacking your pills which I hear is very popular for this predicament, or just have sex while you're on the period. It can still be good- some people prefer doing it in the shower if they are particularly icked out by the idea.

yah, i don't really wear them anymore outside of sex. i have a divacup for daytime. although i have used my sponges during light days at work, etc. i never really cared too much about weirding other people out in bathrooms, lol.

In the future, stack your pills! Instead of taking the fourth week of the typical 28-day birth control, throw them away and start a new pill pack. Yay, no period! You might spot, but some spotting is easier to deal with than a super heavy flow. Doing so doesn't interfere with the effectiveness of the pills. It's kind of an extreme method just to get laid, but when you're so far from your SO for so long, it's worth it.

I did that for awhile (I'm in college, by boyfriend is at home, we like to screw like rabbits on the long weekends and breaks that I get), and then said fuck it and switched to Seasonel, the birth control where you get four periods a year. Periods can still be inconvenient (I had my period on Christmas this year, boo!), but they're much less likely to interfere since they're so infrequent.
