never from masturbation, but after intense orgasms with a partner (particular a partner with whom i've had emotional "issues"), i've often found myself unable to keep from crying.
have you had anything particularly emotionally intense come up lately?
This sort of emotional release is very common (and healthy), and is your body's way of letting go of tension. I'm a massage therapist who specializes in abdominal massage, and this is a common effect of that as well. How this works on a basic physiological level is that during a stressful or emotionally-charged situation, a person holds her breath & the muscles tense up, especially in the abdominal area (also known as the "fight or flight response"). The memory of this traumatic/stressful event gets stored in the muscles. Sometimes the muscles stay tight for a long time. when the muscular tension releases via blood flow (during orgasm, massage, whatever), the emotion also releases. If a person has a history of trauma (or sometimes even if the person is merely very emotionally expressive), the emotional release will be that much stronger. Most of the time, it feels good and like a burden has been lifted. Sometimes, it's overwhelming, and it's a good idea to process it with a friend or psychological professional. Either way, it's all part of "normal" human experience.
