amenorrhea....
Mar. 14th, 2007 10:56 pmIve been having issues with my period as of late and wondering if anyone else has any experience with this problem. I haven't gotten my period since thanksgiving. Zero, Zip, Nada. I've already ruled out pregnancy since I haven't had sex since august because my boyfriend and I are in a long-distance relationship. I took tests multiple times just to be sure. I was on the pill for about 3.5 years. I went off of it in january of 06 because I had tried so many pills and the headaches I got just weren't worth it when I wasnt seeing anyone. When I met my boyfriend a couple weeks later we just used condoms. After he moved and I went to see him for the first time I temporarily went back on the pill for just a month so he and I wouldnt have to worry about condoms (august). Between jan and august my period had been normal- always on time. However, the first day of it was very, very draining- to the point where I was weak and dizzy (like if you have blood drawn but havent eaten enough that day). I got my period a little early after my trip in august, but got it just the same. Then the next time it was 3 weeks late. The following one was a month and a half late, and now Im just not getting it at all.
When I look it up the diagnosis typically always comes back to weight and nutrition issues. Im 5'9 and about 115 and consume around 1000-1100 calories a day. I know it's low, but I didnt realize it was THAT bad. I've always been thin and right now Im only a little lower than my norm.
Any thoughts?

Date: 2007-03-15 04:50 pm (UTC)Once your body fat dips below a certain percentage, you go into a state of amenhhorea, or the absence of menstruation. This happens to some female athletes, and women with anorexia. If you do not have enough body fat, your body cannot sustain a baby safely, so your body stops trying to reproduce every month.
Of course, this could have nothing to do why the OP lost her period, it could be something more serious. Anytime your period disappears for more than a month and you're not pregnant, it's a reason to go see the gyno.

This site (http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm) says that your ideal weight for your height is 129 - 169 pounds.
Your current BMI is 17, which is in the underweight range. A normal BMI is 18.5 - 24.9.
