Is there any way to shorten a menstrual cycle? Mine usually lasts 39-42 days.

Sometimes longer cycles can indicate a hormone imbalance.
You could try working with a naturopath, if you think that might be the issue.
That worked for me.

Longer cycles can also indicate fibriods and the way to get your period back on track is to go on hormonal BC. Talk to your gyno.

hormonal birth control?
i'd agree with emmeangel that longer cycles can indicate something amiss and a chat with your doctor might be a good idea.

i agree with the above posters that longer cycles can indicate a problem. i'd talk to your gyno asap, and ask about going on hormonal BC, even if you aren't sexually active(which you didn't mention in your post)

or you could leave it--there's nothing that says a woman has to bleed every 28 days or else ...

I have to agree.
My periods come about every 41 days. I just had a full physical and there's nothing wrong with me that would cause my cycles to be so different from anyone else's.

But for the OP, if you're worried, obviously go see your doctor, just for the simple fact it could be something that's easily treated, or it could be something more. Always best to find out.

I also have to agree.
My cycle is a bit irregular. Usually about 32 days, give or take a few days. My doctor said that as long as I know about when to expect it, there's not really any problem.

I've been told that anywhere between 22-42 days is within the range of normal.

If having longer cycles bothers you, you could try progesterone cream. I've been able to control the length of my cycles using over-the-counter progesterone cream.
