I might just be paranoid, but I think I may have had a miscarriage. I'm looking at different websites to find out more information on miscarriages, but I do remember someone telling me that a sign of a miscarriage is heavy bleeding when you get your period. And thats exactly whats happening to me. It's never been this heavy before, and I'm starting to freak out. Can anyone give me some more helpful information on miscarriages?

do you think you might have been pregnant?

A heavy period doesn't mean a miscarriage per say.

Per se. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/per%20se) It's Latin. :)

Oh wow, I can't believe I missed that. I chalk it up to exhaustion and a 5 year demanding my attention.

Did you have reason to suspect a pregnancy before this period started? Heavy periods can be the result of a lot of things, not just miscarriage. If your period was late (even a couple days) and you suspected pregnancy, you may be able to determine if it was really a miscarriage by taking a pregnancy test--the hormones take a few days to clear your body after a miscarriage. However, a negative test wouldn't necessarily mean that you WEREN'T having a miscarriage, it would just mean the hormone levels never were high enough to register on a test, or that they have already cleared enough not to register on a test.

If you are soaking more than one pad an hour, that is the definition of hemorrhage. Is your bleeding that heavy? If so, you might want to see a doctor. If your bleeding is not that heavy, you are probably fine doing nothing. If your period continues significantly longer than normal, you notice a foul smelling vaginal discharge, or you start having fevers for no apparent reason, those can be indications of an incomplete miscarriage that would require medical attention. But if you were already expecting your period and it really is a miscarriage, your body will probably clear everything out on its own just fine. Miscarriage, like birth, does not usually constitue a medical emergency.

I agree. Can you give us more information? Were you using a form of birth control? Did it fail?

Many many pregnancies end very early on, often even before the woman even knows she's pregnant. It's called a "chemical pregnancy". (http://miscarriage.about.com/od/onetimemiscarriages/p/chemicalpreg.htm)

I'm not saying you had one, just mentioning it.

If your period was on time, it's more likely it was just a heavy period.

If it was late, it's possible it was a chemical pregnancy.

What's your concern or question about the situation?
