hi!
My name is Olivia, I'm 17 years old and I just joined the community. I've always had an issue with taking pills so I always thought that if i had sex i'd have to do the "condom and spermiside" thing. But now their are all these new "1 week, 1 month, and 5 year" birth controls out their. So my question is does anyone use a multiple year birth control in this community? And if so is it working for you? Are their any side effects that I should know about?

I'll be going to my doctor in a few days and I want to bring this up. So any help that I can get before I go would be helpful. So if someone could point me in the right direction that would be absolutely wonderful!
Blessed Be!

XOXO
Olivia

If you're having troubles swallowing pills, there are other options for birth control. There are patches, shots, and vaginal rings now too. You might want to expand your research on birth control options into those as well.

Also, if you don't want to get pregnant, you should always use a condom while having sex even if you're on a contraceptive pill/shot/patch/ring since there is no 100% effective birth control.

They all have their pros and cons. The patch is changed once a week (http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control/birth-control-patch-ortho-evra-4240.htm), Nuvaring is once a month (http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control/birth-control-vaginal-ring-nuvaring-4241.htm), and there are a couple of different IUDs (http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control/iud-4245.htm).

Hopefully this will give you a little information to start with. :)

I used Nuvaring for a while. As far as convenience went, I loved it. I did have to take it out during sex usually (I guess I'm just one of the few that can feel it), but other than that I never noticed it. The reason I stopped is that I started to get really moody from it, and it wasn't really appreciated by me or my man.

I don't want it to seem like you'll have problems with it, though. I've had problems with other hormonal suppliments I've taken, so I'm assuming I'm just overly sensitive to treatments like that. As far as other side effects... My cramps have always been bad, and with Nuvaring they were slightly worse, but lasted a shorter period of time (one day as opposed to three). Also, my boobs went up almost a cup size (!!), but sadly that didn't stay when I quit using the ring. And as per usual with birth control, my period got significantly lighter and went from ~6 days to 4.

I've got an IUD, and I totally love it. I'm as protected as I'd be if I were sterilized, and I haven't had a period since May. Whoo!

i had a mirena IUD for about 9 months. although i didn't get bad mood swings or headaches like i did with the pill (OTC-lo), i did bleed/cramp for most of the 9 months, which is the reason i got it taken out eventually. but i know a ton of people who love their mirenas (see above comment), and they last for 5 years! :)

I can sympathize with the pill bit, as I too have trouble swallowing pills. I have an iud, which has worked out wonderfully for me. It's quite feasible to have one even at your age, and even with never having had children. [livejournal.com profile] iud_divas is a great community for information on them.

That would be my recommendation at any rate. :)

I had problems remembering to take my pill so i switched to NuvaRing. It's a vaginal hormonal ring that's inserted one time a month for three weeks than removed for one week for you to get your period. Then another is inserted. Off label, you can use it to skip periods (leave it in for four weeks then remove and immediately insert a new one for 3-4 weeks) and i've done that before when i've had times when I'd rather not have my period. Usually I don't have issues with my period since I use a menstrual cup, but like...the weekend I went to the beach with my fiance I skipped my period (and we ended up engaged! lol). Stuff like that. :-)

oh--I've been on it for like...4 years at this point and have never personally felt it during sex. I've never had a boyfriend tell me they could feel it. one time during uh..manual stimulation..a now-ex boyfriend told me he was wondering what it was but thought it was a diaphram (what? how do you confuse the two? anyway...) but that's been it.

Depending on your issue, you may not want to rule out the pill-they're itty bitty.

Side effects from birth control can really vary person to person. Unfortunately it can be a trial-and-error deal to find what works for you. I love Yasmin, for instance, and can't go off it since it's type (and that of its generic) of progesterone is the only type that controls my cramps. My sister went on Yasmin and was sick to her stomach and irritable and couldn't sleep for two weeks.

I've been on Microgestin for the 3-month cycle and it's been wonderful. My doctor told me that I could go for 6 months without a period if I wanted, but to make sure that I had at least once a year. I love it immensely. At first it felt a bit odd to go a month without a period, but now I don't even notice or think about it.

The only side effect that I had was one that I'd never heard of before. Whenever I'd be menstruating I'd lactate. It was really weird, but when I switched to a lower dose it stopped completely.

I'm on Depo Provera (the shot). It's once every three months. I get my second shot tomorrow. So far, so good! I've heard some people not liking it, though.

There is a problem with bone thinning while on depo provera, however. It's suggested that patients monitor their calcium intake. I take calcium supplements. The studies say that once the patient is off D.P., she stops bone thinning and beings to go back to "normal." The suggested time frame on D.P. is two years, but if the patient wants to stay on it, there can be a bone density test.
