I've never borrowed a pad from Gwen.

perhaps you were not inserting it in the proper direction?

No, you aren't a freak. It happens, sometimes those muscles contract and nothing, no way, no how, is getting past.

Sometimes using lube helps.

Yup. Especially on a tampon with an applicator, a little lube smeared over the tip or around the opening to the vagina helps it get in. (It works with applicator-free tampons too, but work fast and only cover the tip, as you don't want the cotton to absorb lube.)

Of course, if you're already very wet or bloody, the lube is beside the point, and it's probably just tightness keeping the tampon out. But if it's just dryish tissues, lube helps.

That happened to me last time i had my period.

It was weird, because it was on one of my heaviest days...so it wasn't like it was totally dry or anything. Meh. i used a sponge instead, that worked easier.

You're not a freak. Happens to me CONSTANTLY usually when I'm attempting the whole annoying process while standing. When I finally do get the applicator in, I push on the stupid plunger and it just will not happen. If I'm at home, I lay down on the floor and it works better but that's not exactly an option if I'm at work or in a public bathroom (ewww).

you aren't a freak! (at least not for that reason.)

that used to happen to me three or four days into my period ... the thing about tampons is that they disturb the natural (moist) environment of the vagina, which would account for the difficulty you're having.

i use the keeper (http://thekeeperstore.com). before that, i used these things called INSTEADs. you can read a little comparison of the two devices here (http://www.jademagazine.com/5iss_menstrualcup.html).

you can leave both of them in for up to 12 hours. when i started using them, i noticed my period was shorter and less painful, although i'm not sure it's that way for everyone.

I use tampons and pads, but one way that I stay moist enough is to use only two tampons in a row, followed by a pad for a few hours, and to use tampons only when I'm at high flow for the first couple of days of my period.

I lose things. A Keeper would cost about a year's worth of tampons and pads for me (Except for the first two days of deluge, I have a very light flow), and I'd probably lose it within 3 months. And my arthritis sometimes makes my fingers so sore I can't even manage tampons, so I'd certainly drop the Keeper in the toilet or on the floor a few times.

INSTEADs are disposable!

(and they're easy to insert.)

Yeah, but I'd use something besides tampons because of the disposability issue. I don't like making too much extra garbage. Insteads make as much as a tampon does, so I may as well use tampons.

I think this little argument can be settled by saying that everyone has something different that they prefer.

Some of us have no problem with tampons and pads (myself included)

Others prefer INSTEADS or the Keeper or sea sponges, etc.

To each his own...

or, to each her own, even. :P

i didn't think we were arguing -- just sharing preferences and information.

true -- that's why i switched to the keeper.

personally, i would never go back to tampons, just because of stuff like what you described in your post.

but hey -- the whole point is to do whatever makes you feel comfortable, right? :)

i don't know a lot about sea sponges, but here (http://www.jademagazine.com/5iss_menstrualcup.html) is a link about the keeper and insteads.
