I posted this in my journal, but I'll post it here, too, since it's relevant:

Um...help?

I just woke up from a nap and went to the bathroom, and as I was cleaning off my period-having self, I heard something go *plop* in the toilet. When I stood up, there was a blood-covered blob of something about the size of 2 quarters floating in the water...I suppose it could have been old toilet paper or something, but I would have felt a wad that big so I don't think so. So I think I passed a clump of some kind of tissue. And that was a pretty damn big clump. So. I'm freaked out. Help?

could it have been a piece of an old tampon that had broken off inside of you?

that's really strange. i don't think it'd be a miscarriage either, since you wouldn't have been very far along at all.
the reason that i asked about the tampons is that sometimes part of the outsides of mine will shred off and i don't realize it until it comes out later.
i would suggest giving the dr. a call if you're still having cramping and pain.

The extra pain could easily be placebo -- something weird happened, and now you're "making" the extra effects. It's like taking sugar pills and getting cured/getting a headache. You could simply be having some extra pain "down there" because something weird happened "down there."

But if you do seem to have cramps and some pain for a longer period of time, you should probably give a doc a call, just to allay your fears. You should've saved it!

It's not uncommon to pass clots the size that you are talking about. It's scary as all get out, but it's *probably* nothing to worry about. If you pass any more clots, feel SEVERE cramping, saturate more than a pad every 90 minutes, or start running a fever (greater than 100.5)...you should call your doctor immediately or go to the nearest open medical facility. If you are still worrying about it, or if your gut really tells you something's wrong (never ignore your instincts) call your doctor in the morning. Until then, if you are able to take ibuprofen for the pain, take it. Use a heating pad or hot water bottle on your belly, drink plenty of fluids, and just pay attention to your body. REST!! It's possible that you had a very early miscarriage, and if this is a possibility, give your doc a call in the morning. Hang in there...

I pass a clot that big two or three times a year. I'd worry if it were more often, or lots during one period, or mid-cycle, but I think "occasionally" is normal.

Well there was a time when I had a very light period on time, followed by a heavy, clotty one a couple of weeks later. At my regular gyno appt about a month after that, he told me that there was a good chance I had a miscarriage.

When's your next appointment?

Then your first exam is about 4 years overdue. Do you have insurance or other medical access? It's time. You can ask about the clots, get a pap smear and breast exam, and have any other questions answered.

Yes Caro. Get thee to the gyno.

They're no fun, but I'll get you a sucker for afterward.

With all the bleeding thats been going on, all I can say is drink lots of fluid and take vitamins because you are probably losing lots of iron which is NOT a good thing.

Stay healthy!!!!!!
