Wow, I randomly stumbled across this community (from [livejournal.com profile] anti_ana), and I was just wondering earlier today where I could ask about this stuff...

9 or so months out of the year I'm reasonably regular (not exact cycles, but roughly every month, give or take a few days). In winter, I'm not.

For the past four years (at least. Four years ago was the first time I really noticed it), my periods have stopped from October or November until the end of December or January. The first two times it caused pregnancy scares, but the third time, pregnancy would have required immaculate conception. That's when I realized the pattern.

Sure enough, I'm late again this year.

I'm curious as to whether anyone's ever heard of predictable irregularity like this.

I have various hypotheses - it could be caused by a change in eating habits or activity levels, or a reaction to the temperature and light level changes (the first time I noticed it was also the first time I was in a climate with actual seasons). Or some combination of the above. Or, at this point, it might be mental - I've always had some degree of semi-conscious control over my periods (speaking of which, it'll quite likely start tomorrow, now that I've mentioned it here).

Who knows.

It's a bit annoying this particular time (though not scary, as it's been in the past). I'm supposed to be starting birth control pills, and you're supposed to wait until the first Sunday of (or after) your period to start them. So I'm waiting...and waiting...and waiting... I think I'll try the parsely tea which was mentioned below.

Speaking of birth control pills...I have mixed feelings. I feel that I'm finally reasonably in touch with my cycle - I may not be able to look at a calendar a month ahead of time and point out the day it's likely to start, but I've got the signs down, and it never catches me by surprise. And now I'm going to go and throw that all out the window...

Perhaps I should invest heavily in dark jeans :)

Having just had a freakishly long cycle (long for me - 39 days) I went and checked my info at http://www.cyclespage.com - I did have an extra long cycle around this time last year, too.

1. It could be related to seasonally affected depression (horribly acronymed as SAD). If you're depressed from lack of sunlight, your body probably doesn't think this is a good time to concieve.

2. It could be stress, if you have to deal with family/holiday shopping/final exams. Always a good one to screw up your uterus.

3. If you're a student going home/coming back for winter break, it could also be that your periods are "synching up" with other female memebers in your house.
