since my mom got blood clots from the pill, i was a smoker and slighty overweight this was the only BC they'd put me on. i was on it for a year and i regret every single minute of it...
1) i gained a crazy amount of weight. i cant lose it. its been 7 years since i got off it. 2) i was tired all the time...didnt wanna do anything active. 3) gave me mood swings big time... 4) its been over 3 years of unprotected sex and i still cant get pregnant and there isnt anything wrong with me or my husband.
pros~ 1) i didnt bleed except for a a couple days before my next shot was due and then it stopped right after. 2) when i did have my period i didnt get the killer cramps i usually get. 3) i didnt get pregnant. 4) it was easier then trying to remember a pill everyday. 5) more convient.
i did see on tv a documentary on castration. they had this part where they give some sex offenders in prison chemical castrations. what do they use? depo provera. it causes them to have no sex drive and some cant get it up along with the messing up the production of their sperm. is that scary or what? i wonder even now what else it has done to my body.
over all i give depo the thumbs down...if i could of gone back i'd would of just put up with condoms and spermicides....
My experience with Depo was short in that I only got one shot.. I got that shot over 5 years ago and because it was such a horrible experience, I haven't been on any chemical birth control since. Side Effects that I had: Horrible mood swings-moving into thinking I was crazy and also suicidal. I gained almost 50 lbs in 3 months. I didn't have a period for over 9 months! (But gained 'water weight' every month and couldn't seem to loose it.. I looked like a swollen balloon.) I had ZERO sex drive-none-nada! (This is a big one for my husband and I.. It just doesn't work-we're both very active and it was a huge strain on our relationship to have me not interested, which was SOOOO not like me normally.)
I also have a very good friend who had almost the exact same effects from the Depo shot, so if you'd like-you can count this as 2 votes for "No"..
I hear it works great for some people and if you choose to try it, I hope that it is defiantly something that works for you. I would just be hesitant because the side effects were so severe with some people that it can be a life altering thing- even with just one shot.
I threw heavy glass ashtrays (that i loved) at my boyfriend (who i loved) for no good reason. I cried daily. I bled like a stuck pig (yes a stuck pig) and I hated every living minute of my life. After depo I only threw light weight objects I didn't like much at him (the boyfriend) :) seriously though I would rather not EVER experience that again. It was scary to have so little control over my hormones for 3 months at a time.
thumbs down
