I ordered my keeper, it still hasn't arrived but I'm patiently waiting. Any tips on inserting it properly? Any tips on removing it without ruining my bathroom rug? Suggestions for public bathrooms? Any problems? Etc?

you might want to use a bit of KY jelly when inserting it, at least for the first few times until you get the hang of it, now I just find that the wetness from washing the keeper is enough lubrication. I find it easiest to insert/remove it while standing with one foot on the toilet or bath.
Another challenge is keeping it folded until its in, but you should be able to overcome that with a little practice.
Also, having a bit of toilet tissue ready will ensure that you don't ruin the bathroom rug!
When using the keeper for long periods of time, its a good idea to check it every now and then to make sure it hasn't gone up too far (this can lead to leakage) if that happens all you have to do is pull the stem a little until its back in the right place.
Lastly, when removing it, pull it by the base of the keeper rather than the stem (once the base is in reach), this releases the seal making it easier to remove.

as a general rule, you shouldn't have to empty it in public bathrooms at all (unless you live in a dorm with community restrooms, etc.) -- don't forget you only *have* to empty it every 12 hours, and even if you have a really heavy flow it'll probably last you quite some time... though maybe someone who's used it when they're flowing heavily can give you hour recommendations, or something? I've been on BC almost every time that I've used it, so... okay, well, anyway. oh, and if you *do* have to remove and empty it in a public bathroom... be sure to pinch the bottom a bit, rather than simply pulling on the stem, 'cause it'll make a really loud sllllllluuuuuuuuuuuurp noise (from releasing the seal)... hehe :X though usually it's a good idea to do that anyway, 'cause it can cause a slightly crampy feeling if you pull on it without releasing the suction...
I'm babbling, hehe, sorry... if none of this makes any sense whatsoever, ask and I'll explain later when I'm able to form a coherent thought ;)

I usually get that sllllllluuuuuuuuuuuurp noise once Ive put it in and it opens out in there hehehehe it makes me giggle. I don't know how I'd cover that up in a public restroom heh.

i might be rather naive in this department... so my question now is what exactly IS a keeper? i of course know the general mechanics of it, but specifically what is there about it that makes it different i suppose?

have a look at http://www.keeper.com if you haven't already, I think the most useful information about the keeper comes from the user's testimonials. The thing I find so different and so good about it is that I don't have to tend to it as much as I did with pads and tampons (I rarely used tampons because they always leaked), that is it needs to be emptied/cleaned much less frequently than a pad needs to be changed (I can leave it in for up to 12 hours on my light days, and even then it's never full when I wash it out). Also, I'm glad to be free from that constant wet gooey feeling I used to have when using pads, (a friend of mine used to refer to this wet feeling as "tomato ketchup pants" LOL) as well as the leakage that would occur on occasions. I think I'm just happy to be free from the hassle of using pads, I always felt like I had to sit still and not move around too much to avoid leakage, but with the keeper I don't even notice its there and I've never had any leaks.
It must be similarly liberating for women who have success with instead cups and sea sponges.

the Keeper is a little rubber cup, of sorts, that one wears in her vagina to hold menstrual blood.
most (not all, but a large majority, in my experience) women who have used the Keeper, swear by it.
more info is available at http://www.thekeeper.com ...or watch this community, as I'm about to make a big huge post about it. hehe :)
