Don't most people *know* before they get their period? I get mine during the start of the month, but I never keep much track since about an hour before I start bleeding, I can feel it, so I go get a pad or something.. I'm wondering since it seems like some women just get surprised by it, every month, year after year..

I don't mean 'feel it' as in cramps or PMS or anything like that.

Before I started birth control, I NEVER knew when I would get my period until it started. As in...there was a stain on the back of my pants or I'd wake up with a wet feeling between my legs.

I prefer knowing much better.

It's funny, I used to "know" in the same way you described, but I don't anymore since having my IUD. I think this is because I spot for a few days before getting my period, so I don't get the same definite start I used to have.

Usually I get some light cramps for a few days before I start, but sometimes it'll be a week and sometimes just a day, or not at all. And sometimes I can tell the minute I start to bleed (feel the wetness on my underwear or on my legs) but usually I can't.

I am the queen of preventive pantiliners, both before and after. I've messed up too many pairs of underwear and pants ...

I find I feel heavy "down there" the day before I get my period. You know the weight I am talking about, like your vagina weighs about 4 pounds...

I think I know what you're talking about. I get a discomfort which I wouldn't really classify as painful, just uncomfortable. Never really thought about it as a weight, but what you're describing sounds similar.

Gwen said it!

God I get that feeling to and it is crazy that every time I tried to explain that "heavy" feeling no one knew what I was talking about. I heard a lot of women say they only experience something like that if their vagaina has "tilted" or if they need a hysterectomy.

snooze

I'm rarely taken totally by surprise, but at least once a year there's a sequence of events that equate to brushes with embarassment. ... Part of my warning sign is cramping and intestinal problems. But, if I've had something to eat recently that I think might have caused that and it's earlier than usual, I don't take it as a sign. I also work at a computer 8 hours a day. Sitting down for that length of time, my grrlparts get pretty insensitive after a couple hours. The pressure also holds in any flow. So when I stand up after a couple hours, sometimes I get a very sudden, very heavy flow. And if my drawer supply of goodies has run out and I don't have any quarters on hand for the dispensor... ugh!

So it's usually a combination of carelessness on my part, bad timing, and bad situation.

Way more than you really wanted to know

I always have a pretty good idea.

Oftentimes, but not always, I'll get a bit of spotting (not even enough to need a pantyliner, really) 2 or 3 days beforehand. That goes away for a day, and then my period starts.

When that doesn't happen, I can usually still tell - I tend to get dry down there a few days beforehand, and I get a kind of achy feeling (not quite cramps), especially during physical activity, starting a day or so before it starts.

If I dream about having my period, that also probably means it's about to start, though that isn't always accurate.

I'll also get crabby and PMSy starting a few days before, though I often don't notice it except in retrospect ("Oh, so that's why I was snapping at everyone yesterday...")

Also, my period tends to start around the time I get up in the morning, and be very light for the first half day or so, so I've never had trouble with sudden flooding. The only times I've had serious staining are when whatever I'm using for protection fails, or one time when I decided to be stupid and wait a while longer before starting a pad because I didn't feel like wearing one yet :)

Of course, now that I've started birth control pills, all of this is probably out the window and I'll have to go with preventative measures until I can re-figure it all out.

Before I went on the pill, my cycle was never perfectly regular, but I always kind of had this "womanly intuition" (for lack of a better term) about when it would start. There wasn't any physical stuff, but somehow I would know about a day or two before.

Now that I'm on the pill, of course, I can generally tell to the day, just by looking at my pack of pills.
