Quick question--

Does anyone know how soon after conception a urine test at the doctor's office can detect pregnancy?

Went yesterday for an exam, and I think we had a little bit of miscommunication. Anyways she did a pregnancy test and it was negative but I think she thought it had been much longer since a regular cycle. If I am/is/was/whatever, from what I can figure out, the conception date would've been around a week ago, give or take a couple of days.

Anyways- any insight on if I can just trust their test or was it too soon really to trust a urine test? We're not trying to get pregnant and I'm trying to start the pill again after taking a month off- so there is a chance (slim though) that I could get pregnant. What's freaking me out a little is my breasts are swollen and sore and I'm just getting really tired.
Okay- I know I'm just stressing and the results are right, but would like some verification, you know?

Oh- has anyone ever had to have their pap done TWICE at the same visit? ARGH. I hate the burnning (for lack of a better word) feeling of someone scraping my cervix. The nurse accidently knocked the first sample off the counter so they had to do it again. God, yesterday was just a hell of a day.

From what I know...

It takes about 5-7 days after implantation for the zygote to start releasing the human growth hormone that is detectable in the woman's urine.

From what I've heard, whether or not a urine test is accurate right away seems to depend on the person. I've had home pregnancy tests accurate within a week of conception, but others don't work for months. If in doubt, ask them to repeat the test or do a blood test.

Honestly, it depends on the test. Some of the urine tests are accurate several dayz before your next period is due to begin, I believe. Most of them will tell you on the box.

16 days after ovulation you can do a urine test to find out of you're pregnant.....though it might not come up positive yet if you don't do it first thing in the AM.

Also if it's the first time you're pregnant you release less of the hormones so it might not be positive for a few days to a week after that even.....after each sucessful pregnancy the hormone levels become higher sooner.

That's interesting about the hormone levels increasing. How far does a pregnancy have to go for this to happen? Do you actually need to give birth, or what?

I believe the Dr. and the midwife BOTH said to me that the hormone doubles every 2 days.

This is one way they date the pregnancies of us irregular people! And for those of us that miscarry early, you get 2 blood tests. One, and then one 2 days later to see if the hormone levels increased enough.

You start producing the hormones at implantation which occurs 5-10 days after conception. It doubles every 2-3 days in a normal pregnancy. If I remember correctly, 2 days after implantation, a blood test may be able to tell, and another 2-7 days after that for the urine test. The following web site has a comparison of the sensitivity of the various tests:
