Well, your body is putting out hormones that cause your Uterus to contract and push out its contents. I have found that my cramps were worse when I was a teenager then when I got into my 20's. I think a woman's reproductive system goes through phases (just my opinion, of course).

cramps occur when prostoglandins cause the uterus to contract, the actual pain is the result of the uterine muscle being deprived of oxygen when it is contracting to the degree that blood flow to the muscle tissue is restricted, its the same thing as with any muscle cramp, when a muscle overworks blood flow is restricted and lactic acid builds up in the muscle cells, which causes burning pain.

Another factor with uterine cramps is muscle tone of the uterus, weak uterine muscle tone will make cramps worse (weak muscle tone in the uterus will also make labor more difficult, by making it more painful and/or slow). Yoga exercises help tone the internal organs including the uterus, there are also herbal remedies that improve the tone of the uterus such as Dong Quai and Raspberry leaf.
