It is very normal for your period to do totally bizarre things, especially when you're as young as you are. Going to the doctor is a good idea; I doubt that there is anything at all wrong with you, but a doctor will put your mind at ease.

But honestly, periods are just *weird* sometimes. I'm nearly 22 and I've been having mine since I was your age, and it's always been really strange -- never on time, weird colors, etc. And my doctor pronounced me totally healthy, so try not to worry too much.

Hi fireseeker and welcome!
Well about your late and light monthly--
Are you over 15-20 pounds underweight?
Do you have a really low body-fat content?
How long have you been getting your period?

If you’re not significantly underweight, just kind of skinny, and you have a little bit of fat on you, and if your period started just a year ago or so, you’re probably just fine. :-)

However if it has been going heavier and regular for a few years and this is a new development, or you have been losing weight, you probably want to make sure and get in to see your doctor.
Sounds like you may want to see a doctor anyway, they can be really good at helping explain things.
It's totally normal for girls to be irregular and light the first couple of years they have their period.
Do you have any other adult woman you trust around? If not, get on the wait list for a "big sister" through the big brothers and sisters program. I think it's so important for all of us woman to have other woman to talk to about this stuff. This community is also the perfect place! :-)

good luck and take good care of yourself. :-) sometimes just adding in a couple of fresh pieces of fruit and veggies a day can really make a difference. Also a b-complex vitamin and general multi-vitamin may help regulate you too.

If you're concerned about your weight / eating to be affecting your period, make sure you are getting a healthy balance of whatever you eat. Getting enough vitamins is very important for your growth and development, in addition to having regular periods. If you aren't sure about it, you can check with your doctor to make sure you are getting enough of everything you need. Maybe taking vitamins will help you if you are concerned about weight gain from eating more than usual. I'm not sure how much you weigh and how much you eat, but as long as you eat healthy when you do eat, and supplement with a multivitamin, you should be OK. Like others have said, it's not uncommon to have strange periods when you're young. I'm 23 and I've been having periods since I was 11. From age 11 until I was around 15 or so, I would bleed for one day, then stop for a day or two, then start bleeding again and it'd continue for another 7 days after that. Really heavy, lots of cramps, etc. Doctor said I was just fine.. but when I was 15 he put me on the pill - Triphasil - to help regulate things up a bit (it also helped that my mom was in there with me, and SHE even wanted me to be on the pill).

Hi there!

Don't know how much you weight, how much you eat, or what your body shape is like (for instance, if you're usually thin plus you grew a lot last year, or something like that)--but if your weight is low for your height right now, or if you're very physically active, that can certainly affect your cycle. Plus, yes, when you're in your first few years of menstruating your cycles can just be *strange* sometimes (mine sure were!). Like everyone's said, the main thing is to just eat healthy--get enough water, vitamins, protein, fiber, and fat (yes, get enough fat! *grin* not a probelm for most people but if you're really into health food or really hyper-health-conscious you can seriously confuse your body by getting too little fat), and not too much of the "junk food" stuff--but I'm sure you knew that! :)

The doctor can probably answer your questions in more detail... it might be helpful, if you have a handful of questions for her/him, to make a list of them before you go in--that always helps me remember. (Oh, and if by "weird dark color" you mean dark reddish or brownish--that seems to be normal from my admittedly limited experience--mine is like that sometimes, and several other women here have mentioned the same thing. Just FYI!)
