i know there's a planned parenthood near me, and i'm a college student, so i know i could go to student health as well.... but i'm wondering.... my periods are extremely irregular, and i feel like i ought to go to a gyno... besides that, i'm 18 and a half and i've never been... keep thinking that i should go? but i don't really want to tell my mother, etc... she'd get freaked? so would pp charge me for a visit like that?

It's a good idea to get regular, annual checkups, even if you're not having sex. You can tell your mom you're just interested in your pelvic health. I had my first exam at 16, and my first sexual experience at 19.

Planned Parenthood generally offers a sliding scale. They might charge, but it'll be what you can afford. Student health is an equally good option.

Your mom shouldn't freak. Tell her that your regular doctor has told you that ALL girls and woman should be seen by a gyno on a yearly basis. Sex has nothing to do with it. Physical health has everything to do with it. PP will charge you on a sliding scale. (based on your income) So if you make no money, chances are it will be free or like 15 bucks.

... not that i like advocating lying to one's parents, but why is it any of her business? you're an adult, and it's good that you're taking an active interest in your health; a pelvic exam is good for an adult female to have, sexually active or not. They don't take long, and probably cost what you can afford at planned parenthood or the campus health clinic. so--if you feel comfortable telling your mom, do so and go; if you don't, then go without telling her, but don't let your unease about telling her keep you from going.

sorry if this has morally offended you terribly, just my sometimes-not-humble-enough opinion :)

Your mom shouldn't freak out-- going to the gyno isn't all about sex. I went for the first time because I had a bad yeast infection, still very much a virgin.

I'd try your student health services first, because they're less likely to charge you anything at all. I go to my college's health center for my yearly pap smears and to get birth control, and it's the easiest and most convenient way for me to go. PP is good as well--confidential and cheap.

But yes, if you're 18 and having irregular periods, that's two good reasons right there to be going to the gynecologist.
