I'm pretty much a yoga whore and I do yoga at least a half hour every day.

I just borrowed a yoga videotape from a friend and there is a warning beforehand that says: menstruating women should not practice inverted poses, back bends or vigorous standing poses.

I never knew this and I always do yoga when I have my period. Am I causing a lot of dammage?

Thanks!

... my non-medically-educated guess is so that you won't shift around things and end up staining yourself *grin* never heard of any medical reason why not to unless you're in too much pain from cramping.

if it makes you nervous, phone your doctor and ask, but i'm close to 90% certain that there's no blanket medical reason why not to.

The reason I've heard for not doing inverted poses is backflow. It's apparently something that can cause problems over time.

I was told this too, I guess the theory is that being upside down while menstruating makes the blood flow back or something. I don't like to do inversions while menstruating anyway because I generally feel kind of weak and light headed.

actually, the reason has more to with ancient Indian Ayurveda than medical reasons.... it leads to blockages in the Prakirti, which in turn inhibit practice......so, if you aren't to the spiritual aspect, just physical, don't sweat it.
