[identity profile] jo71.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] menstrualhut
I've been hearing a lot lately about "natural sea sponges" for use in menstruation, so I did a bit of research. I had never heard of these before joining this community.
I've seen pictures of them, read the care and use instructions, etc., but I'd like to hear personal experiences in using them.
They seem like they'd be easy to use, and money-saving...not to mention environmentally sound...but again, any personal experiences using them?
Thanks in advance!

*chuckle* I really need to find a link to one of my comments on this... seems like at least twice a month I chime in on this. I used them, have used them for months, love them, never had a lick of trouble. great great great :D

as far as leakage goes, the way I hear it they are better than tampons because they are already absorbent - not hard cotton that has to get wet first, and they are more form fitting, being spongy. It may take a month (week) to figure out how often your body needs it rinsed and replaced though, depending on your flow. I never could use regualr tampons because they were so hard and hurt so bad, but the natural sponges are soft and giving and conform to you automatically, so might not be as much trouble.

Also I have never used one, but have you considered a Keeper or Instead? I hear good things about them too...

a little off the subject

i just started using sea sponges on thursday. i bought a package of 2 and used the fisrt one for 3 days and now i'm using the other one. i love it! one of the best things is that my bleeding isn't really even, so when i used to use tampons i would sometimes take them out when i'd hardly bled at all and be really dry. also putting them in was also sometimes painful and dry. but the sponge you wet first and then squeeze water out of so it's moist and soft. very comfortable. and when i take it out, even if i've only bled a little i don't feel like i'm ripping apart my vaginal walls. the only thing is you have to be comfortable with sticking your fingers in your vagina everytime you take it in or out, after a few days i'm discovering that it works better for me to sort of place it in, rather than shove it in. also it can be difficult to get out, twice so far i've had a hard time. it helps to bear down on your muscles so it pushes out more and you can grab it. i haven't had any problems with leaking, though i didn't use it on my heaviest day (i got it the next day). as far as cramping goes. i just learned recently that things in your vagina, like tampons makes you cramp more. and i sort of disreguarded that theory. but it does seem like this period my cramps have been very minimal. i totally reccomment it!!
