I have a couple of questions, and i'm hoping someone, or everyone can help me with expertise..

I'm 16yrs old, not sexually acitve. My period's been irregular since I got it (i think i was 11 or 12). I get killer migraines, and get horrible sudden anxiety/depression just before it starts. And when it finally does, it is heavy for a week, and i have cramps that keep me out of school doubled up in pain at home. I've tried midol, it doesn't help. I've tried ibuprofen, tylenol, all that otc painkiller stuff, and nothing helps any of it.
I'm worried most about the anxiety/depression because it is very sudden and intense, but the cramps and migraines are just as bad sometimes.

Would birth control pills help with all of this? If not, is there anything that will? 4 years have been way too much for me, and if I'm going to have to deal with this into my 50s, I think I'm going to end up getting a hystorectemy. (sorry about the spelling)

thanks a lot!

Yup. Birth control will definatly help. Or, rather, should help, as every woman is different.

I used to have similar cramps, along with diarrah and major horrible, flu-like symptoms the day before and during. My period was so irregular, I'd skip months at a time.

I was put on birth control and now I don't even notice a difference when I get my period. It feels so good not to feel like I'm coming down with the flu once a month. I'm like clockwork, too. I know my period will start Sunday night and end on Thursday, which is also the day I start a new pack of pills.

Talk to your doctor, birth control may be the way to go. :)

Oh, god, I thought I was the only one to get weird gastrointestinal crap around my period ... sometimes it's loose, and sometimes, well, it gets all hard. :-> Gaaah. TMI.

You know, I have the same sorts of problems with my period. Irregularity and INTENSE anxiety/panic attacks and depression right before it starts. I think that taking the pill can alleviate all of these, but on the flip side, it has other issues within itself (weight gain, decreased sexual arousal, weight gain).
I personally don't like the pill and would rather find other ways of managing these problems. Other women like it more than I do, so it just depends.

As for the mood symptoms. Exercise is prolly the last thing you feel like doing, but it honestly helps achieve some kind of hormonal balance. Exercise, masturbation, healthy diet, etc... all contribute to a healthy emotional balance.

As for regularity. I've never been regular, but the thing I've noticed lately is that my period comes with the full moon. (kinda weird huh?) so I've made peace with it. YOu'll make peace with yours too, you just have to figure out what works for you.

oh yeah, and about the cramps. if Ibuprofen doesn't work, see your OB GYN, you could have other issues. THey can prescribe some medications good for these kinda cramps. ALso eliminate caffeine/alcohol before your period and see if that helps.

bc pills will help calm the cramping and regularize everything- but mention to the doc. that you get migraines. some pills can make them worse, not better, so s/he should know about the headaches and try to prescribe a brand that is less contra-indicative for migraines.

Birth Control helped me a great deal with some of the symptoms. I'm a big fan of Rescue Remedy for a lot of the anxiety/stress depression. Also watching my calcium, magnesium, (increase) and salt and caffeine (decrease) helped a great deal.

My period was never really regular until I went on the pill; I'd had it for seven years or so by the time I did.

For cramps, I'm a big fan of the heating pad or a hot bath, along with whatever I'm taking for pain, which has varied from herbs to OTC to prescription stuff depending on how severe they are. Or, I let the cat sit on me-I think that's the best thing; it's relaxing emotionally, which makes the physical things easier to cope with. I've done Tai Chi and yoga also, which have at different times helped. Keep moving-the endorphins from exercise and or masturbation/sex seem to help. I don't usually feel much into the either, but can be convinced more often to go out and walk or swim, or something else that gets them flowing.

I think the biggest thing for me was to stop hating my period-that didnt happen until after I was on the pill because that's when it started being less than 10 days. Now I find it empowering and sometimes annoying...

hey there,
im 19 and have been on the pill for almost two years now. I too had horrible, bed-ridden inducing cramps. I got my period first when I was 15, kind of late. It was always regular though. But with being regular came HORRIFIC cramps, bloating, diarreaha, migraines, and mood swings. I would miss school and be sent home because of it. So the summer before I was going away to college i talked to my gynecologist about going on the pill to help with it. She started me a few months later and all was well. The only CONS i had was that it took my body a couple of different types of pills before I found the right one. The first kind made me have my period every OTHER week (waaay to often), the second kind made me ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY RAVENOUS as in I would eat EVERYTHING in site, so i gained a lot of weight. I was on Alesse for the good part of a year and that was fine, and now I am on Ortho-Try Cyclen cause my skin had started acting up. I suggest talking to your dr. about the pill and what will be right for you. It's good to get it under control now then, like you said, having to take dramatic measures when you are older. Also, try asking for a prescription for the pain if you don't really wanna try the pill. alright hope i was helpful in ANYWAY sorry if this was LONG!!
TAKE CARE AND GOOD LUCK!

The pill will almost certainly help with your irregularity and killer cramps. It will probably *not* help your moods, however. BC pills most often increase depression, not lessen it.

i too have horrible cramps, but..... as hard as it may sound, if you can stay away from painkillers, the pain will eventually get better... the more painkillers you take, the lower your threshold of pain is.. and the sicker your liver can get.
also, before going on the pill, take into accoutn what else it can do to your body....
good luck *hugs*
