I hate daylight savings time. I never know quite what to do about when I take my birth control pills. Do I just set my alarm for the same hour as always, or do I set it for an hour earlier (so that I can keep taking them at the same time)?

argggh. I only have a week left, if I take all of them an hour later, I can't screw things up too badly, can I?

You set an alarm for them? I always just took them at bedtime.

When I was taking them, my doctor told me that within a few-hour time frame was good enough.

pill timings

In order for the pill to achieve its 99.7% effectively rate, it must be taken within close proximity each day. Current research in contraceptive technology says that this frame of time is within 15-30 minutes either way. That means if you take your pill at 10:00, the acceptable window is from 9:30-10:30. Not taking the pills at this rigid schedule will force the levels of estrogen and progesterone to be constantly changing. This will lower the effectiveness of the pill, and may lead to side effects (break through bleeding, nausea, etc).

It is very possible to get pregnant (and sick) if you consistently take your pills on an irregular schedule. If you do miss your pill, take it as soon as you remember. Example: Jane takes her pill at 7:00 every night. She realizes she missed her 7:00 pill at 10:30. She should take the pill at 10:30 (to make up for the one she missed) and then take tomorrows pill at her regularly scheduled time. If you realize that you have missed a pill, take it then. Take the next pill when it is normally due.

I hope that is clear, I’m in accounting class and I’m not supposed to be on the computer.

Although EVERYONE says that they should be taken at the same time, my doctor and two nurses all told me that timing does not matter when taking the pill, as long as its generally the same. As long as you take it in the morning, the dosage stays in your body, or at night, or around lunch, or whatever. The only time it matters is if you change taking it in morning or evening every day or whatever. This is what my doctor and two nurses told me, but I am not an expert.

i was told this too by the doctor who gave me my pills... as long as it's generally the same time of day then it's okay.

if i remember correctly, taking the pill at the same time every day matters a lot more with the progesterone-only pills than it does for pills with both hormones...

Agreed - I'm on progesterone-only pills and if I don't take them at the same time each day (within an hour or so) I get breakthrough bleeding. Hate that. When I went on vacation to the west coast, I didn't give it any thought and I bled almost the whole trip. Bleh.
