hi there...

i've been on ortho for several months and it's fixed a really fucked-up cycle, but i'd like to get rid of it completely. i know if i skip the placebos, i can stop most of it..save for some spotting and such.

the question is...how safe is it to stop having my period? possible health complications/side effects?

info would be much appreciated..

My doctor said it is -and I quote- medically unnessecary for someone who doesn't plan on having kids in the near future to have a period.

But you're right on the spotting. She recomended getting a period every three months, to flush out the build up and avoid spotting and break through.

4 periods a year isn't a bad trade off.

It's commonly recommended that you have a period at least every couple of months. If you're looking to stop your periods, you might want to try a form of birth control that is actually designed to do that, like Norplant or that shot (Depo-Provera?) that you get every few months.

Niether of them are designed for it, it's just a side-effect, and not one that all users experience.

It depends which Ortho pill you are on. If you are on a phasic pill (one that has different hormone levels in at least one of the weeks - most phasic pills have three or more colors of pills), it may not work. You are more likely to have constant spotting than to skip your periods.

If you are on a nonphasic pill, it usually works fairly well for most women. You may have break-thru bleeding from time to time.
