Is the Keeper easier to use than Instead? I've tried Instead before but I just can't get the hang of it, no matter how hard I try. I don't like using tampons... maybe my aversion to tampons could explain why I don't much care for Instead.

And since I don't like using tampons, would the Keeper even be right for me? Or should I just stick to pads? I was thinking about getting some cloth pads (if anyone knows a link to where I can buy or make some, please share!) but I work twelve hour shifts, so changing them at work wouldn't be feasible. Maybe I could use the cloth ones on my days off and disposables when I work.

that is all.

Depends. What don't you like about tampons?

"Depends" are overkill, don't you think? ;)

(Some days, in my heavy-flow twenties, they would have been just enough.)

Yeah, I realized what I said after I pressed the post button. ::grin::
More accurately: "That depends." :)

The Keeper is a gum rubber menstral cup, worn internally, that collects your flow, as opposed to absorbing it.

For more info try The Keeper Store (http://www.thekeeperstore.com)

I've never tried Instead but I as well hate hate HATE tampons. For some reason I always seem to make a mess of them, you'd think it would be quite simple to use them but I have yet to master the art of non-leaking tampons.

I've used The Keeper for about a year, I have no trouble with insertion, pretty much the rule of thumb is if I can feel it then I did it wrong and I need to re-insert it. Leaks are rare, emptying is simple, I don't have to carry around bulky pads in my purse to change, I don't have to worry about toxic shock or anything like that. Before The Keeper my period would last 7 full days, since The Keeper it lasts 4 days tops, I've heard from many users that their periods have become shorter as well. It's simple, its clean, its comfortable and it works. Not to mention all the money you save by not having to buy feminine plumbing products every month, nor throw away bags full of waste. I highly recommend it, even to tampon haters like me.

Instead and the Keeper fit in your vagina in completely different ways...so there are many women who love one, but find the other just doesn't work at all. Instead fits like a diaphragm, the Keeper fits more like a cork would. Many women find that Instead just is not the right size to stay put comfortably...diaphragms come in zillions of sizes to try and fit well in that same position...but Instead is one size fits "all". Why not give the Keeper a try, you've got a 3 month garauntee to find out if you like it.

so its one thing.. and you buy it and then you are done? so where do we get info, how much does it cost, and how do you 'drain' it? Sorry i'm still a bit confused.

Keepers are reusable for about 10 years. You can buy them directly from the company, many natural health and food stores also carry them. The exact price will depend on where you buy it, but it should be about $35. You remove as needed, dump, rinse, and reinsert. Tons of great information is available at the company's website http://www.thekeeper.com. There is also an lj keeper community [livejournal.com profile] the_keeper.

Do you know if the Keeper is safe for women who are prone to UTIs? I'm reluctant to put anything into my vagina for that reason, although the Keeper sounds like a great product (and I'm really tired of using pads).

Most Keeper users do not find themselves more prone to infections. No increased risk for BV (which is the way that Keeper use could potentially lead to a UTI) or yeast infection has come up. You can read more about the keeper on the keeper site, and the community is good place to ask for the experiences of people who have used it.
