question:
i have always had pretty regular periods that last five days max. this month, i've had my period for 12 days and counting. the only difference is that i did start a b/c pill this cycle for the first time but i know they don't start messing with your system for a month, right? any ideas why i'm STILL bleeding?

I'm not sure what you mean by "Messing with your system" but when you start putting hormones in it, you can start having side effects-even in the first month, one of which can be bleeding. (One month for them to start, one for them to get worse, and one for your body to get used to the pill and for them to settle down=three months, which is what the usual suggestion is for starting a birth control pill.) It's entirely possible that you're still bleeding because of the pill, and that you would need to call your doctor and find out if you should switch pills or continue on this one.

Is it bleeding literally as though you still had your period, or more like spotting? If it is the former you may want to consult your health care practitioner. It's likely not a problem, but it never hurts to check. If it's the latter it's just a small war going on between the pill and your body's natural cycle. You were probably on your period or just finishing it when you began the pill. Your body is trying to get rid of the endometrial lining that has already broken down, but the pill is telling your body to conserve endometrial lining and build it up (combined pills simulate the hormonal state during pregnancy - and you need lots of endometrium if you're pregnant). End result - lots of spotting or a rather extended period. This particular side effect usually goes away as soon as you have one period on the pill's schedule (during placebo week).

You're very welcome. That does indeed sound worthy of checking in with your gyn. In all likelihood you'll just be told not to worry - but it really feels better to have the right person say those words.
