Truth or Fiction?

This is going to sound really 'mommy's girl'-ish of me, but my mom always told me to never take a really hot bath or be in hot water while on your period. Is there any truth to this? If there is, why is it such a bad thing? A nice, hot bath helps with my severe cramps...

I've never heard that before. In fact, all the sites I found while looking up the theory came up with "Taking a hot bath will help you sleep during your period" to "To ease tention and aches in the hips and lower back while on your period, try a steamy hot bath."

I'm interested in what the idea behind that. I'm fairly sure that its okay to take hot baths while on your period.

I started soaking in very hot water for my cramps in 1976, and have never had a problem with it.

must be some obscure old wives tale that i've never heard of. warm baths... warm anything for that matter, during menstruation are always very relaxing. don't worry about it -=]

The old wive's tale went something like "don't take a bath when you have your period because you will bleed to death"

Obviously, that has no basis whatsoever.

But I can't take a hot bath or shower during my period. I get so sick and it's so bad i can't even stand up for a few minutes after i get done. I don't know why but maybe that has something to do with what your mother told you?

perhaps it's raised body temperature combined with a bit of anemia that brings on the weakness, etc? hrm... just a random thought.
