not menses-related, but it's a woman problem, so i thought i might ask...

i get yeast infections about the same time every month and the doctor says it might be related to hormone levels from my birth control pills. has anyone else had this problem? if so, what did you do about it?

I haven't had one in a long while but a few years ago, when I would get them fairly regularly, they always seemed to pop up a few days before I started my period. The daughter of someone I work with is in a similar situation so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was due to hormone levels.

I just started having this problem recently. A vinegar douche seems to help. You're not supposed to use them more than once or twice a week tho'.

Here are a couple of off-the-top-of-my-head and all-over-the-place suggestions:
- yogurt. It really works.
- Going off the pill. If you are on the pill to relieve mentrual discomfort (why do we call it that? it is PAIN!),etc, --> I was on the pill for years for that reason. But I have gone off of it and had excellent results with dietary changes. I now have a vegetarian diet (very little dairy, it seems to be a culprit) that is high in soy products. For me it is so much better than being on the pill. OTOH, if the pill is for birth control, there are lots of options there. I just posted this somewhere else here in this journal, but I think that it is an excellent book:
Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control and Pregnancy Acheivement by Toni Weschler, MPH, isbn: 0-06-095053-6

Good luck with it.

...polysystic ovarian disease... That so does not sound like fun :( Good luck with it.
So, I guess I have to edit my list of suggestions to be: yogurt. Eating yogurt at the first sign of infection, is often enough. Since you get it at the same time in your cycle each time, you can start before. Just eating yogurt has always worked for me. But I know some women, who don't get relief from just eating yogurt and they spread some on a pad. They swear by it.
I was also thinking - what is the supplement you should take after being on antibiotics? Acidophilus? Would that help yeast infections or is that strictly for digestive-system flora/fauna? Or is that what is in yogurt? I should find out. I eat very little dairy and I have a hard time eating the yogurt when I need it...
Anyway, I hope you find a good solution to this. Yeast infections are awful. Good luck and keep us posted about your progress :)

Choosing the right pill

I'd have to say that if things got worse when you changed pills, that you have probably figured out the problem. I have had difficulties with birth control pills in the past. Things like major depression, and stuff like that. I was having a very rough time with heavy periods about a year ago. Clots, anemia...it was awful.

I tried taking Mircette for awhile. It's a birth control pill that is a relatively low dose. I loved what it did for my periods. But I don't really like taking the pill. Since then, I have started using Chinese herbs and acupuncture for a variety of reasons, and it is working great for me.
