May. 22nd, 2001 05:07 pmTo 00g and everyone else who've asked:
Microserfs is a book by Douglas Coupland which in a gutsy move for a guy he has his female characters sitting around chatting about their cycles and such and at one point they realize that Fry's (a geek-uber-store) has male hygiene products but did not carry feminine products-- yeap, no pads or tampons etc. There's even a converstation on OB vrs applicators... anyway-- the girls start a club called Chyx (which I am sooo there about) and actually picket Fry's for being sexist.
This book is like the defining book of my life-- people who want to understand me better are directed to it. No- its not perfect but neither am I. :) And there is a microserfs LJ community though it is pretty quiet.
Anyways-- skip ahead years after I discover the book. I find out that Fry's really exists. OMG. :) The guy I was in love with lives in San Francisco and works in Silicon Valley and when I got to go out for a visit, he took me to Fry's and made sure we checked to see if they carried tampons or not before we left. Such the couplandesque moment. :)
They do now. Smack me for not buying everyone some for Christmas :)
Granted, not much of a selection and honestly I have no idea if the book was truthful or if they carried them now because of the book or ? but still-- there's a bit of poetic justice for us girl geeks in the world. :)
Fry's is the ultimate store and while they are slowly coming across the states (I'm in North Carolina) it is on my list of many reasons to move to SF. And no- guy mentioned above is not even near the list anymore.
Microserfs had a much better ending. :)
