Off topic... but I think it's worth sharing..
Last night, my boyfriend his father and I went to get our hair cut. My boyfriend also got his beard trimmed and I mentioned how nice it looked and how he should maintain it. Then his father starts going off about how it's such a pain, and what a hassle it is to go to the barber all the time, and how their hair needs to be cut more often.
I wanted to smack him.
Yeah, booo hoooo you have it so hard. Not only are women the child bearers, but I think that when it comes to grooming, we also get it harder than the guys.
They have to shave, get a haircut and bathe. Their products include shampoo, shaving cream, soap, deoderant, and if they're nice, cologne.
Women, however need a lot more care than men require. We shampoo, condition, lather rinse and repeat. Scrub, exfoliate, moisturize, blow dry, style shave and wax. Don't even get me started on all the makeup. It's ALL marketed and produced for women. We do this stuff. Just yesterday, I just went in for a trim, and got guilted into getting my eyebrows waxed by my stylist.
"Do you wax your eyebrows?"
me - no.
"well, you should."
kind of snotty, but point taken. no one offered to wax my boyfriend's bushy eyebrows that day. no one offered highlights or color, deep conditioning, facial exfoliator, expensive hair products or manicures.
So next time I hear a guy bitching about how damn bad it is to be a man, and how hard it is, I'm going to smear hot wax on his eyebrows, rip it off, then kick him in the nuts.

Date: 2002-11-05 09:04 am (UTC)Of all these things, I shampoo and condition. I don't usually repeat, as unless it's been a couple of days since I showered, my hair stays clean enough to do it just once. I moisturize my whole body every day or two. I've had dry skin since I was a little kid.
The man I live with does all this, plus shave his armpits and his face. I definitely have it easier than he does.

My husband, on the other hand, takes almsot an hour to get ready to go out to a trip to the store. He has hair down to his shoulders, and he's got absolutely gorgeous, thick, luxuriant blonde hair, so he doesn't look stupid like most men with long hair do. But he spends more time BRUSHING it in the morning than I have brushed my hair in my entire life. :)
He's definately high mantainence.
Re:
Date: 2002-11-05 11:02 am (UTC)but this boy ... ugh. he NEVER brushes his hair, except before he shampoos, that is, if he's going out. one time, he found leaves in his hair that had been there for god knows how long. gross. long hair is nice on guys if they can maintain it at least.

Date: 2002-11-05 12:35 pm (UTC)he has long hair, too. so he just has to get it trimmed once in awhile, wash and condition daily, and shave around his beard. he has skin medication, and curly hair. he definitely has it harder than i do.
i have long hair, i wash/condition it and shave my armpits once a week or so. and i take care of exfoliating by using a scrubbie glove in the shower. that's it.
i'd never bother having a personal style that required blow-drying, styling, coloring, waxing, etc. i don't have the energy nor the patience. ;) and i don't let folks who think i *DO* need to do all of that rule my life.
Re:
Date: 2002-11-05 01:06 pm (UTC)but i felt like such a sell-out yesterday when I actually got my eyebrows waxed. ugh. they STILL itch.
last week, i gave in and bought a hair straightening iron, determined that i would do "something" with my hair ... i must admit, that though it takes about 20 minutes, I like how it comes out in the end. usually, for the past 6 months, i just pull my hair up in a bun and go, but.. i'm tired of that so im doing the girlie thing.
i even bought makeup last night. :-| I like "playing" with makeup sometimes, but i'm not the slave some women are... the concealer, foundation, powder, shimmer, eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow, blush, lipliner and half a pound of caulking. no thank you. a little color here a little lipstick there, seems enough to me.
i'll admit, it takes considerably more junk for me to be all groomed n good to go than it does for my boyfriend. shower, cologne, deoderant n he's out the door, while i'm still burning my ear with a straightening iron.

Date: 2002-11-05 01:45 pm (UTC)eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara (sometimes), lipliner, lipstick, and powder. that's about the extent of it. i love playing with it.
and i do sometimes style my hair, but nothing requiring gooey products. pigtails, falls, chignons... whichever.
i find that i need far fewer products by using fewer and simple things. nothing scented, nothing that could make my skin or hair unhappy... and then i need fewer products to make me look good. i already look fabulous. ;)
as for curly hair... my husband has it. he discovered that he has less trouble with it by leaving it alone. he used to play with it incessantly, brush it when it was dry, etc. no wonder it was frizzy! now it hangs in lovely ringlets without anything more than a shampoo/condition and wet comb-through. if he has to go into the office, he uses some unscented, mild hair gel.

Date: 2002-11-05 01:37 pm (UTC)Yeah, sure it's all marketed to women.. but who's forcing you to do it all? I really only shampoo and condition. (And the conditioning is to keep the tangles away) I don't even own a blow dryer and don't care to.. Not to mention makeup. Haven't had any since high school... and didn't wear it very much then either.

Date: 2002-11-05 05:59 pm (UTC)Oddly enough, my ex-boyfriend preferred it much more when I didn't wear any make-up. I was happy to oblige. :)
I tend to wear a little bit of make-up most of the time (a dab of concealer where it's needed, maybe some eyeliner, clear mascara to keep the lashes curled, a touch of blush), and my ex told me I was more beautiful without make-up, I laughed "You can't even tell when I'm wearing any!" and he insisted, "But it's the principle of it!" Hehe. Cute, huh? :)

Date: 2002-11-06 10:49 pm (UTC)When I shower I shampoo my hair. Period. When I wake up I brush my hair. It's waist-length but it still only takes 2 minutes. I put it in a ponytail-bun and forget it.
I gave up shaving a while ago. My husband loves me. And I feel more real, more womanly this way.
Re:
Date: 2002-11-07 05:20 am (UTC)I'm kinda low-maintenance, but there are a few things I Need to do ... conditioner is important cause it makes brushing my hair easier, and once or twice a week I shave... but the whole weakness of getting my eyebrows waxed earlier this week was out of guilt ... sales people are really persuasive, and she made me feel like I had two hampsters perched above my eyes instead of eyebrows ...
my skin is too screwed up to do all those wierd girl things to it, the littlest thing makes me break out, but I love playing with all those yummy-smelling bath & body works products :)
