There's probably several women in here who have had the two-, three-, or more-week periods. Was there ever a case that a doctor was able to help you deal with it? Or was it more of a "take more iron and cross your fingers" solution?

My mom's doctor gave her something because she was having really, really long periods... four weeks or so but my mom is having menopause related weird hormones. I have no idea what it was because I try block these conversations from my memory. Sheesh... I really don't want to know that my parent's have sex in the shower when my mother is having her period so that they don't stain the sheets.

Good luck!

I used to be a sexual/women's health RN and what we'd do for people who were having longer (over 7 day) periods was put them on birth control pills. After a short period of time on the pill, their cycles would be lighter, shorter and less painful. There's not a lot of other treatments available.

I went on the pill. The first pill I was on took my period from 14 days to 4. I switched pills this year when I switched insurance and now it's even lighter, and shorter.

Had that happen this spring. Got my thyroid treated. Back to my old week-long, 40-day cycle schedule again. One doctor originally tried to give me Provera for it without running any tests, but I knew somehow that there was something else wrong, so I got a second opinion.

I don't think everyone who has this problem has a thyroid problem, but I do think everyone who has this problem should get a thyroid test.
