It's not the sex that helps, it's the orgasm. It takes your uterus out of spasm, at least temporarily. I've gotten moderate relief from it. I would recommend manual masturbation, however, over intercourse, because then you don't necessarily have to have penetration, which can increase discomfort rather than abate it.
i used to get this quite often, i found it was only really with deep penetration (which was most of the time because he was quite ... long). I think it's when it hits the cervix, it causes you to cramp up... reflex i suppose. if that's what it is, experimenting with different angles can help.
Orgasm used to make my cramps worse... that is, the orgasm itself would feel great, but then I'd get bad cramps right after. That was my best measure of figuring out when my period was coming! But since going on the Pill, I haven't experienced that as much.
